Hi Friend.
The last thing any family needs to worry about is their budget getting squeezed even more. But I know a lot of families are seeing higher prices these days and are looking for answers.
My focus is on concrete solutions to help solve this problem and to get people relief. I’m staying vigilant to ensure big corporations aren’t taking advantage of this situation to squeeze people for profits. We also can't slow things down by turning this into a partisan political issue.
That’s why I’m pleased to share some good news. My legislation to ban surprise medical bills is now law and took effect on January 1st, 2022.
Please click here to learn how it can help you in this quick clip on KCTV5.
KCTV5 had a story about the new No Surprises Act to stop surprise medical bills. Click here to see a clip.
Unexpected medical bills have burdened far too many Kansans for far too long. But now, help is here.
The bipartisan No Surprises Act bans surprise billing for emergency services, regardless of where they’re provided. It also helps ensure you don't get a surprise bill for the accompanying care that you may need during the course of your treatment. It bans out-of-network charges for anesthesiologists, assistant surgeons, and other supplementary care provided at in-network facilities.
The law includes a version of my bill to protect families from surprise billing. It requires insurance companies to update their lists of in-network providers at least every six months. Before this law, no federal rules required insurers to update their hospital or doctor directories. You could see a doctor you thought was in-network, only to get an unexpected bill later.
If you seek emergency care, you shouldn't have to worry about financial ruin. This law is crucial for protecting families and giving them peace of mind.
It’s important to me to stay connected with families throughout the Kansas Third District. So many have shared their concerns about the cost of health care with me. Lowering the cost of health care has been a top priority of mine since I took office.
This law is a critical step in the right direction. Now we have to keep pushing for more progress.
That’s why I’m glad that another law I voted for, the American Rescue Plan, is delivering tax cuts that are lowering premiums for people who buy their own health insurance.
These tax cuts can save the average household in our district $3,8000 a year on premiums. Now no one has to pay more than 8.5% of their income for a silver rated private health insurance plan.
If you need health insurance, there’s still time to get covered. Open enrollment ends on January 15th, 2022.

We have to make health care more affordable and accessible for everyone – from prescription drugs to premiums.
I’ve also made it a priority to let Medicare negotiate with drug companies for lower prices. You shouldn’t have to pay more than three times what folks in other nations pay for their medicines. Too many people now can’t afford their prescriptions while drug companies make big profits. We need to change that.
We made important progress in our recovery in 2021. More than 200 million people are now vaccinated. Our economy created more than 6 million jobs. Our schools and small businesses are open again. We have to keep building on that progress. That has to include lowering costs for Kansas families.
It is an honor to serve you in the U.S. House of Representatives. If you have any questions or would like to share your views, please feel free to contact me.
My warmest regards,
Sharice L. Davids Member of Congress
