A Note From the Desk of Congresswoman Letlow

Recent weeks have brought a flurry of activity with congressional votes, listening sessions in Louisiana, and President Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night. As always, I value spending time with Louisianans and listening to their priorities and concerns.

I continue to support initiatives in Congress which secure our border, expand domestic energy production, and support an economic recovery. To that end, the House of Representatives recently passed a budget resolution that took the first step in providing tax relief for families, enhancing border security, and ensuring responsibility in government spending.

Please feel free to always reach out to my office directly when you have questions, comments, or concerns. Our team is always accessible through our website by clicking here. We are here to serve you!

Sincerely,

President Trump Addresses Congress

Last week, President Trump had the opportunity to update Congress and the country on the accomplishments and priorities of his second term. His address was a strong message which emphasized work to secure the border, increase our energy production, and fix the Biden economy. I support these policies and am excited to work with President Trump to turn our country around. I was thankful to share a moment with the President before his speech to thank him for the work he’s doing.

Supporting Louisiana Farmers

Agriculture is a major industry in Louisiana, and I’m proud to be a champion of our farmers and ranchers in Washington D.C. I recently asked President Trump’s new Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, to enhance access to foreign markets for Louisiana rice exports. As a leading rice-producing region, Louisiana producers play a key role in growing the national food supply and strengthening our rural economy. Additionally, I recently had the honor of meeting with an outstanding group of young farmers from Louisiana while they were visiting Washington to advocate for pro-agriculture policies.

Fighting for American Energy Production

One of the largest causes of the inflation rise under President Biden’s leadership was a spike in energy prices, in part caused by overregulation of our oil and gas industries. To that end, a major focus of our work in the House of Representative thus far has been undoing President Biden’s destructive attacks on American energy production. I’ve supported multiple congressional actions in recent weeks to undo burdensome regulations from the prior administration, including voting to block the implementation of a natural gas tax finalized near the end of President Biden’s time in office.

Visiting with Students and Veterans

I love spending time with groups from Louisiana who come to visit our nation’s Capital. Last week I had the chance to show students from University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge around the U.S. Capitol, pointing out historical features and answering their questions about Congress. I also had the opportunity to catch up with some Louisiana heroes who served our country in uniform, who visited Washington as part of a trip sponsored by the Louisiana branch of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ensuring Fairness in Social Security

The Social Security Administration recently started implementing the Social Security Fairness Act. This landmark legislation abolishes WEP/GPO provisions and restores earned retirement benefits for many Louisiana public servants. It was an honor to help move this legislation across the finish line! Thank you for telling me your stories over the last five years so that I could share them on your behalf in Congress. In the weeks ahead, the agency will provide affected retirees with updated monthly benefits, and will also be paying out retroactive benefits. Please be advised that some eligible for retroactive and updated benefits may not see updated payments take effect until April. If you have further questions, please visit this webpage or call our office.

Legislative Update:

Check out some of the notable pieces of legislation I’m supporting!

  • I supported legislation H.Res. 189 to formally censor Congressman Al Green for violating congressional rules by disrupting President Trump’s speech and refusing to stop shouting even when warned by the Speaker of the House.
  • I supported H.J. Res. 35 to repeal an added tax on natural gas finalized during the closing days of the Biden Administration, which would’ve imposed added burdens on our domestic energy production and raised costs for Louisiana families.
  • I supported H.R. 804, the Rural Small Business Improvement Act, to ensure that job creators in rural areas which have suffered from natural disasters receive adequate emergency assistance.
  • I recently cosponsored the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which protects law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment right to conceal carry and travel freely between states.
  • I supported S.J. Res.11 sponsored by our own Senator John Kennedy, which overturns a Biden-era regulation unnecessarily restricting oil and gas exploration and creating higher energy costs.
