Recap: Our Time in Community Last Week

Dear Neighbor,

With an incredible and busy district work period underway, I’d like to share a brief recap of how we spent our time together in the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District last week.

Women’s History Month Special with the Bay State Banner and GBH

To close out Women's History Month, I joined the Bay State Banner and GBH at the Boston Public Library for a special-edition interview about my personal story and career as the first Black woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress. Watch now at BayStateBanner.com

We discussed some of our legislative priorities, including my efforts to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, address the rising unemployment rate for Black women, fight for accountability and healing of survivors of sexual abuse, secure federal funding for our essential community programs, and more.

Discussing Housing Justice and the Importance of Eviction Support

At 2Life communities in Allston-Brighton, I convened a roundtable with renters, advocates, and community members to discuss the housing crisis and introduce legislation to support families facing eviction. As someone who knows the trauma of coming home to an eviction notice on your door, it’s a priority of mine to address this crisis and hear from our communities.

My bill, the Housing Emergencies Lifeline Program (HELP) Act, would support those facing eviction by funding legal representation for those at risk of eviction, cracking down on illegal evictions, prohibiting credit reporting of evictions, rent, and utility debt, and more.

Visiting Students at Mendell Elementary

It was a joy to visit young learners and dedicated teachers and administrators at Mendell Elementary in Roxbury. I joined our students to hear about how school is going, what they love about learning, and even sing “I Am Enough” together.

Talk with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi

It was an honor to join Dr. Ibram X. Kendi in Cambridge this week for a timely discussion about the origins of modern authoritarianism. We talked about his latest work and how we can fight the white supremacist, fascist agenda being pushed by the Trump White House.

Communicating with our Neighbors

It’s a priority of mine to ensure you all know what my team and I are doing to support you. That’s why I was glad to record a timely interview with WCVB’s CityLine program to discuss this week’s pressing issues and what I’m doing to fight for the Massachusetts 7th. See here for more!

Engaging Pillars of our Communities

Our community centers and committees are essential to supporting the diverse experiences of our Massachusetts 7th neighbors. I was grateful to visit the All Bright Community Center to meet with residents and staff about the importance of housing stability, issues they’re dealing with, and how they’ve been supporting our neighbors in Allston Brighton.

It was also wonderful to join the Somerville Community Corporation for their Annual Block Party and discuss the power of grassroots leadership, equity in action, and what it means to build communities of belonging and care. It’s always an honor to hear from our neighbors and explore how we can continue to strengthen our communities.
