My fellow Marylander,
Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a relaxing and joyful holiday season.
Congress is back in session, and what a week it has been. I want to begin by addressing the deeply disturbing events we all witnessed in Minnesota. The video scenes are chilling, and I am calling on Homeland Security Secretary Noem to appear before Congress to answer for how this murder happened and ensure our communities are never again put at risk. Americans deserve safety rooted in the rule of law—not terror or intimidation.
I am working hand in hand with members of the Maryland delegation and our community to hold this Administration accountable and deliver for Maryland families. Keep reading for more updates, including a victory to lower health care costs.
As we move forward together, here is a look back on all we accomplished together in Maryland’s Sixth in 2025:
Venezuela: No One Is Above the Law
The fundamental question surrounding the strike on Venezuela is simple: Was it legal?
The Constitution is clear—military force is lawful only if authorized by Congress or in response to an imminent threat to the United States. I was briefed on Venezuela this week. Nothing the President said meets that standard. The seizure of the Venezuelan government and the promise of U.S.-led regime change are unlawful.
As a Member of Congress sworn to defend the Constitution, I will challenge this behavior wherever I see it—at home or abroad. Read my full statement here.
Thank You for Joining Our Telephone Town Hall
Thank you to the more than 7,000 Marylanders who joined my Telephone Town Hall last night. I appreciated hearing directly from you and answering questions on health care affordability, the Administration’s military actions in Venezuela, immigration issues, and the urgent need to hold this President accountable.

Remembering January 6
This week, I joined colleagues on the Capitol steps to mark the somber 5 year anniversary of January 6, 2021 and honor the importance of defending our democracy. With Donald Trump back in power and attempting to whitewash the history of this dark day, we owe the truth to the American people, and gratitude to the U.S. Capitol Police who put their lives on the line to defend our democracy. That commitment – to facts, accountability, rule of law – must always come before party.

Standing Up for Our National Treasures
Congress must put a stop to the “Trump branding” of our national treasures. I’ve introduced two pieces of legislation to remove President Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center and bar future attempts to rename national monuments, memorials, and buildings after sitting presidents. The Kennedy Center is a living memorial to a fallen president and uplifts our national arts. Our public spaces should serve the American people—not partisan politics.

ICE Accountability in Western Maryland
Even before the horrific killing of a mother by ICE agents in Minnesota this week, I’ve been demanding accountability from ICE. I am outraged by reports that the Trump Administration may be considering the construction of an ICE warehouse detention facility in or near Hagerstown. If true, this proposal is unacceptable—and I will fight it with every tool available to me.

Working Neighbor to Neighbor
This week, I also met with members of our advisory board and local leaders to discuss how we can continue working together—neighbor to neighbor—to strengthen our communities and support one another through these unprecedented times.
A Positive Note: Protecting Health Care Access
Lastly, some good news: I was proud to vote to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits! The American people kept up the pressure on their Representatives. Democrats successfully forced a vote, which passed the House! This vote protects health care access for 21,000 people in Maryland’s Sixth District and strengthens rural health care systems. I urge the Senate to bring this bill up for a vote swiftly.
I believe health care is a human right, reliable health care and dignity for everyone — and I will always fight for it.
In closing, I’d like to thank my District Director Annaston Cree for her work on Christmas Eve helping a constituent secure a furnace for their home which was affected by the Western Maryland floods last May. No matter what day or time it is, our office is here to help you.
