Last Friday, I traveled with a Congressional delegation of 27 House members to Minnesota for a field hearing on the dangerous consequences of this Administration’s immigration actions. This followed the recent killing of 37-year-old Minneapolis resident Renée Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, a shooting that has sparked intense controversy and protests nationwide.

I was jarred by the testimony of multiple stakeholders—including local officials and police officers—and by what I personally witnessed: vans set up as checkpoints stopping all passersby and demanding “papers,” profiled detentions of Black, Brown, and AAPI individuals (many of whom had legal status including green cards or asylum, as well as American Indians and peaceful observers), the dragging of a pregnant woman through the street, the seizure of an elderly woman with asylum status from her car while leaving behind her two young grandchildren, the shackling and detention of observers who merely honked horns or blew whistles, and detention holding pens containing 20–30 people forced to stand for hours without food, water, or bathroom breaks. But what I also witnessed was the incredible courage, spirit, and resilience of the Minnesotans in the face of these assaults. Minnesota is not standing down but rather standing up to ICE's actions–and so must Maryland.

I believe in common sense and finding common ground, but sadly, I have found precious little of either this year. Congressman Walkinshaw from Virginia joined last week’s Congressional delegation, and my views parallel his on the situation. Most of my Maryland constituents—and most Americans—want secure borders. They want all our laws, including immigration laws, to be enforced, but they want enforcement carried out transparently, fairly, humanely, and consistent with our American values. They don’t want guns pulled on our children and elderly; they don’t want women dragged through the streets; they don’t want masked, secret police; they don’t want their loved ones to simply disappear; and they don’t want more mass private prisons in detention warehouses—like the one proposed in Hagerstown—that go unmonitored and have unlawfully barred members Congress from oversight. Most especially, they don’t want unarmed moms shot and killed in their cars.

Additionally, from what we all saw while in the Twin Cities, this issue is not about immigration or public safety, but more about political retribution, intimidation and utilizing a paramilitary force against all those who don’t bend to the will of this Administration. Further, these ICE forces with barely 6 weeks of training should not be supplanting local law enforcement actions and making all our communities less safe, nor targeting officers merely trying to protect residents and preserve peace. As your Member of Congress, I am taking on ICE's unlawful assaults. I am working in lockstep with Governor Moore and our federal delegation to push back against the proposed warehouse detention center in Hagerstown, and I will conduct an oversight tour this month of ICE's Baltimore field office. Along with my Democratic colleagues, and I hope a few courageous Republicans, will be demanding that ICE, this Administration and Secretary Noem be held accountable for their actions. We need to turn down the temperature, promote peace, restore safety and well-being in our communities, and stop the spread of terror.

Last, as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill will be coming to the floor this week, I can tell you as your representative that unless ICE's terrorizing actions on our communities are reined in, I will be voting against any further funding of DHS. What I witnessed in Minnesota reinforced a simple truth: what’s happening nationally has real consequences at home.

The Federal Reserve is nonpartisan for a reason—its independence protects economic stability, market confidence, and working families here at home and around the world. We must stand up for the rule of law and reject political intimidation.
