Greetings Sixth District Neighbors:

In January, tensions across the country reached a boiling point as the Administration’s unlawful immigration enforcement dominated national headlines—particularly in Minneapolis, where two residents, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, were killed at the hands of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents. Following the first killing, I attended a Congressional field hearing and heard firsthand accounts from victims and advocates about ICE’s discrimination, detentions, arrests, and abuses of U.S. citizens and legal immigrants, including Black, Brown, AAPI individuals, Native Americans, and peaceful observers.

What is happening in Minnesota is not isolated. Here in Maryland, we are seeing deeply disturbing developments as well. A viral video recently surfaced of conditions within ICE’s Baltimore Enforcement and Removal Operations office—a facility where many of our neighbors have been detained and locked inside. For two months, I made it my mission to gain access to this facility to conduct an oversight tour, and it finally happened last Friday. What I witnessed inside was heartbreaking and horrendous—and it should alarm every one of us. I recently joined FOX5 in Washington, DC, to discuss my experience:

ICE’s Baltimore facility was designed for temporary detention of 12 hours or less, yet its five holding rooms—now with a maximum capacity of 226 detainees—are being used for multi-day confinement. Conditions inside these holding pens are appalling. Detainees are forced to sleep on thin mats and foil blankets placed directly on concrete floors and are not permitted to leave the holding rooms, even for showers or exercise. Each room contains a single communal toilet and sink, offering little to no privacy. Individuals detained behind thick glass walls reported being hungry and thirsty, despite staff stating the rooms had been sanitized shortly before my arrival. Serious concerns remain about access to legal resources and communication with family members. I can also confirm that the video depicting these conditions is authentic.

This fight is far from over, and I am working closely with Team Maryland’s Congressional Delegation to push for answers. I’m cosponsoring commonsense legislation to increase transparency and accountability in immigration and police enforcement—including banning ICE agents from wearing masks, requiring bodycams like other law enforcement agencies, and not deporting American citizens. Because I haven't seen meaningful, good-faith action from the Administration and my Republican colleagues in Congress, I voted no on DHS appropriations.

We all want our immigration laws enforced transparently, fairly, humanely, and in line with our American values. I will fight with everything I have to make sure that happens for Marylanders.

Your Voice Needed: Williamsport ICE Warehouse Plans

Without public input or Congressional oversight, DHS and ICE are moving forward with a $104 million purchase of a 1,500-bed detention warehouse in Washington County. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons has likened these facilities to “Amazon Prime, but for human beings.” People are not packages, and I was proud to join Senator Van Hollen and so many of you in Hagerstown two weeks ago to protest this facility.

I need to hear directly from you your thoughts on this facility–what it means to you, your community, and your family.

Do you oppose the construction of a new ICE detention facility in Western Maryland?

Celebrating the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maryland at Annapolis Legislative Breakfast

Last week, I had the honor of joining Governor Wes Moore, Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, Timika Trasher, and leaders from across Maryland to celebrate the incredible impact that Boys & Girls Clubs have on our children. I am proudly working to ensure that Boys & Girls Clubs can continue providing safe, supportive spaces where kids can learn, grow, and thrive as the next generation of leaders. Special congratulations to Jared and Aysia, the 2025 Maryland State Youth of the Year, for their commitment to leadership and for inspiring their peers!

Mountain Maryland PACE Reception

The Mountain Maryland PACE (Positive Action Changes Everything) conference is truly one of my favorite events of the year and spending time with the leaders of Mountain Maryland always reminds me why. The resilience of the people in Allegany and Garrett counties is powerful. They are neighbors who keep showing up for one another even in the face of real challenges. I’m proud of the work we’ve delivered - from securing funding for water and infrastructure projects, to supporting first responders and expanding access to healthcare. I will always keep listening, showing up and fighting for the communities that make Mountain Maryland so strong.

Roe v. Wade Anniversary: Protecting Reproductive Freedom

We marked the 53rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade– remembering what was lost — and what we’re fighting to restore.

I participated in a Congressional roundtable with Planned Parenthood President Alexis McGill Johnson, raising concerns about maternal and reproductive health access in rural communities and the growing threat of policing women through private health data.

Women’s health data must remain private and protected under HIPAA. I will fight every effort to undermine a woman’s control over her body.

A Hopeful Note: Standing with Westernport

Last year, I saw the devastation in Westernport firsthand. I’ll never forget walking through the town library in knee-deep mud and picking up a copy of Goodnight Moon from the debris. The library director told me it was the heart of the community.

While this Administration continues to withhold FEMA aid for Western Maryland, I’m proud that Governor Wes Moore is keeping his promise to leave no one behind with a $12 million state investment.

With this Administration leaving us behind, I’m proud to fight alongside #TeamMaryland to fill the gaps and ensure our communities receive the support they need to rebuild and thrive.
