Dear Sixth District Neighbor:
This week, the President delivered his State of the Union Address, a sacred and time-honored tradition in which the President speaks to Congress and the nation about the direction of our country. But these are not normal times, and as such they demand a new response.
Over the past year, the Donald Trump Administration has taken actions that have harmed families across our Sixth District - including farmers, federal workers, small business owners, flood victims, and legal immigrants - while failing to fulfill its promise to lower the cost of living. At the same time, it has advanced harmful immigration and enforcement policies, including the federal purchase of a warehouse in Washington County slated for conversion into a massive detention facility without proper review or meaningful public input.
For these reasons, I chose not to attend the speech. Instead, I joined dozens of my colleagues on the National Mall for a “People’s State of the Union” counter-event focused on the real challenges facing American families.
Americans deserve to hear about real legislative action that meets the moment and delivers solutions. Through my new “Costs Down, Opportunity Up” affordability agenda, I am fighting every day to provide meaningful relief and real results. I invite you to learn more about this bold, comprehensive plan to lower everyday costs and expand opportunities for families and businesses across our district.

Bringing Affordability for America
Last week, I introduced my Costs Down, Opportunity Up agenda. It is a response to conversations I’ve heard from constituents in every corner of the Sixth District. From Cumberland to Gaithersburg, families have shared stories about unsustainable costs of living, and how they feel like their kids don’t have a fair shot. My agenda aims to lower prices, expand opportunity, advance Medicare for All, build more homes, and ensure everyone pays their fair share. Read the agenda.

Seven New Community Projects!
I was proud to announce today seven new projects that will support Maryland’s Sixth District! Combined with seven other projects released earlier this year, that’s $18.4 million brought back home to support urgent needs, including affordable housing, education, infrastructure modernization, and public safety. As families face rising costs and economic uncertainty, it’s crucial that we make major and meaningful investments that make our communities stronger, safer, and support jobs and opportunity. Also, are you a community organization or government entity seeking Congressional funding? I want to hear from you! Applicants can now apply for Fiscal Year 2027 Community Funded Project funding via my website from now through Monday, March 9.

Fighting Back: ICE’s Detention Warehouse in Washington County
In Maryland, we believe in dignity. I’m fighting ICE’s plan to turn a Washington County warehouse into a 1,500-person detention center because people are not packages. I’m standing with Team Maryland to stop it and demand transparency. I've also introduced the Keep Ice Out of Washington County, Maryland Act which seeks to do just that--to cut federal funds and give our community a legal pathway to fight it in court.

Shining a Spotlight on Women’s Health at Hood College
Last week, my team and I hosted a Women’s Health Resource Fair at Hood College in Frederick–and I’m proud to report that it was a success! I met moms, daughters, caregivers—women doing everything right and still worried about losing care.
Thank you so much to Hood College President Dr. Debbie Ricker, Frederick Health President Dr. Cheryl Cioffi, and Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater for hosting this event with me. With federal cuts threatening Medicaid and ACA coverage, I’m fighting to protect affordable care for every Maryland family. Women’s health is not negotiable.

Celebrating Black History Month with Art and Food!
As we approach the end of Black History Month, I want to give a special thank you to Taurean Washington–a local artist who is doing amazing things in Frederick! He invited me to his special Taste of Culture event which powerfully showcased the importance of uplifting Black culture, creativity, and community–and wonderful food too! Events like this remind us why celebrating Black history isn’t just about reflecting on the past; it’s about uplifting voices, talent, and excellence happening right now in our communities.
