Dear Neighbors,

Last week reminded me exactly why I do this work.

While Capitol Hill adjourned, I was able to reconnect with neighbors across all five counties I represent. I took this time to visit, learn, and most importantly–listen. Hearing about what's working, what's not, and what keeps you up at night. These conversations aren't a formality for me. They're the whole point. Every decision I make is better because of them.

In Mountain Maryland, I hosted a community forum to talk directly about issues like affordability and immigration—challenges weighing heavily on hardworking families and businesses across our region. In Oakland, I shared lunch with firefighters and heard firsthand about the realities they face serving our communities. And in Cumberland, I had the chance to celebrate a new coffee shop, Lily’s Books and Cafe, which combines two of my favorite things: great coffee and great conversation.

Further East and South, I took part in events to honor those who contribute so much to our communities. At Hood College, Senator Angela Alsobrooks and I celebrated Women’s History Month with Frederick County women small-business leaders who are breaking barriers and building opportunity. In Montgomery County, I honored first responders and their families at a special ceremony. Their courage and compassion keep our communities safe every day, and they deserve both our gratitude and our support.

And this week, your voices made something real happen. Together with the entire Maryland Democratic delegation, we have been fighting to block the opening of an ICE detention center in Washington County. I am proud to share that we have secured a court-ordered injunction halting construction while the case continues. This facility will not open while we have anything to say about it.

This victory - and make no mistake, it is a victory - would not have been possible without the thousands of you who called and wrote to my office to share your concerns. You showed up. That matters. That works.

Inhumane detention centers have no place in Maryland. They have no place anywhere. I will keep fighting on that in court, in Congress, and in every room I walk into.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Communities across the Sixth District are celebrating the spirit of the Irish this week with parades and festivities. I was lucky to spend Saturday in Gaithersburg celebrating with my team and the wonderful residents there. Wishing everyone a happy St. Patrick’s Day! ��

Hearing from Our Educators
I was honored to meet with employees at Frostburg State University and the Garrett and Allegany County Education Associations to learn about their priorities and hear how I can best support them through the federal office. We discussed the Department of Education, SNAP,  after-school programs, mental health, and attacks on higher education. I will keep working to protect public education and uplift the voices of our educators and university employees.

Honoring Our First Responders
On March 11 – which is also “3-1-1 Day” – I spent the afternoon with the incredible volunteer firefighters at the Oakland Volunteer Fire Company in Garrett County. Later in the week, I spoke at Montgomery County’s 51st Annual Public Safety Awards, alongside firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and administrative personnel who have performed heroic acts and community service, which go beyond the call of duty.

I am proud to stand with them and all the hard-working, dedicated people who provide the services and resources that help keep our communities safe across Maryland’s Sixth.

Women’s History Month: Fighting for Women
Women’s History Month is especially meaningful to me as both a mom of four daughters and a Member of Congress–a time to recommit to the fight for gender equality, women’s health, and protections against sexual harassment and assault.

In November, I was proud to vote to release the Jeffrey Epstein files because crimes that happen in the shadows deserve to see the light.

That same commitment to accountability extends to the halls of Congress.

Earlier this month, I voted to refer to the Ethics Committee a resolution that would have required the public release of all harassment claims in the House. I want to be clear: I wholeheartedly support transparency and holding people in power accountable. But this resolution, as written, fell short on critical victim privacy protections and that is not a tradeoff I'm willing to make. That's why the overwhelming majority of my Democratic colleagues joined me in sending it to the Ethics Committee.

Accountability without protecting victims isn't justice. We can and must do both.

Supporting Women’s Health in Rural Maryland
Last week, I was proud to join with women in Western and Mountain Maryland for two important forums: a visit to the Women’s Health Center of Western Maryland and a Rural Women’s Health Roundtable at Garrett College. I heard directly from those on the front lines and gained insights on how to best support families across Maryland – lowering healthcare costs and breaking down barriers. This is a top priority for me, and I will continue to lead the fight to protect women. 

Building the Next Generation of Agricultural Conservation Workers
I grew up watching my father work the land. What I learned is that farmers don't need to be convinced to care for it–they need the tools and support to do it right. Without the right training and technical support, they cannot deliver the conservation outcomes that sustain both their yields and our environment. This challenge is only compounded by a shortage of agricultural conservation workers to support them.

Last week, I introduced two bills with my colleague Rep. Eugene Vindman (VA-07) that expand opportunities for students and strengthen programs preparing the next generation of professionals in these critical fields. Building this workforce starts with investing in community colleges, apprenticeships, and hands-on training programs and these bills will help train the next generation of conservation professionals. 

Joining an Iftar Dinner in Frederick County
As we approach the end of Ramadan 2026, I'd like to thank the Urbana Muslim Association for inviting me and my team to a wonderful Iftar dinner, which provided a forum for interfaith discussion, community development, and friendship. Religious diversity is an important part of life in Frederick County, and we were honored to participate.

Positive Note: Women’s History Month
Over three decades ago, Hillary Clinton stated the words “women’s rights are human rights.” Unfortunately, health care and safety net program cuts are threatening our human rights, but like the women who came before us, we will stand up and continue the fight for equality. We have to elevate women to elevate our communities and reach for a better future.
