Dear Neighbors,

This week, I’m writing to you from Western Maryland, where I’ve been meeting with community members and listening closely to their concerns about ICE’s planned detention warehouse near Williamsport. You deserve transparency and a voice in decisions that affect our communities but so far, the Trump Administration has not provided key information to local leaders or the public.

Yesterday, Governor Moore and I brought Washington County’s faith leaders, small business owners, and nonprofit organizations to a roundtable to hear their concerns firsthand. A proposed 1,500-bed detention facility isn’t just a development, it's a decision with real consequences for human rights, public safety, local businesses, the environment, and already strained local infrastructure. The people in that room serve our most vulnerable neighbors immigrants, seniors, and young people and they are asking the right questions. They deserve clear, direct answers before any path forward is considered.

The White House’s silence is unacceptable. A facility of this magnitude in our backyard runs counter to our Maryland values. I stand with our Governor’s commitment that in Maryland, we leave no one behind and that is the promise my team and I are working every day to uphold for you. But we can’t do it without your voice–please fill out my new survey and let us know where you stand. Also, read what many of our neighbors reported to me about this facility.

Important Update: Homeland Security Funding Lapse

Last week, I stood on the Capitol Steps with my Democratic colleagues and signed a discharge petition to get TSA, FEMA, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other Department of Homeland Security agencies funded. The White House has a long way to go to make meaningful reforms at the Department of Homeland Security to stop unlawful immigration enforcement raids, arrests, detentions, and discriminatory practices. Let’s get our federal workers the backpay they deserve.

ICE Enforcement at the Airport: Know Your Rights

Instead of paying TSA workers, Trump is deploying ICE into airports.

Democrats are ready to fund FEMA, TSA, the Coast Guard, and other Department of Homeland Security agencies. However, Republicans are prolonging a shutdown to shield ICE and Customs and Border Protection from reform.

Here are ACLU Enforcement at the Airport resources to stay informed and know your rights. If you or a loved one needs help, call my office, 301-926-0300.

GUARDRAILS: A New Bill to Protect You Online

I’ve built my career advocating for digital protections for our most vulnerable Americans, including children and seniors, from cyber threats like fraud, data breaches, deepfakes, and more. Businesses do better and strive to do better when commonsense laws are in place to guide their decisions. I am proud to join Rep. Don Beyer to introduce the GUARDRAILS Act to ensure states can continue enacting commonsense digital policies because tech companies do better, and strive to do better, when commonsense laws are in place to guide their decisions, and this bill does exactly that.

Standing up for Voting Rights

Let’s call the SAVE America Act what it is: an attempt to stop millions of eligible Americans from the ballot box. It could stop millions of eligible Americans from voting – including many married women whose names have changed, veterans, and seniors. This bill isn’t election security. It is President Trump’s excuse to deploy ICE near polling places and dismantle the right to vote. Voter intimidation is unacceptable!

Reality Check: HIV Prevention

Last week, I had the pleasure of standing with seven Real Housewives on Capitol Hill to raise awareness about HIV prevention and treatment. These reality stars are using their platform to emphasize the importance of accessible, quality, and timely care for reducing the risk of HIV transmission. There are currently approximately 1.2 million Americans living with HIV – and their access to care can be a matter of life and death. They deserve to have healthcare that they can rely on, so it is our job in Washington to ensure it.

Honoring the Women of Frederick County

I was honored to celebrate the women of Frederick County at last week’s Women of Excellence and Trail Blazers of Tomorrow Awards! There are so many women who have made a meaningful impact in the Frederick County community last year, including high school seniors who are emerging leaders in our community and already making a difference. It was the perfect opportunity to honor the past, present, and future generations of women leading and leaving their mark on the world. Congratulations to all the honorees! I look forward to continuing the fight for equal rights with you.
