Dear 6th District Friends,

I believe as your Congresswoman that it is important for me to show up everywhere across the district, that my office be accessible on constituent matters and that I update you regularly on my legislative priorities and community outreach. My observation, sadly, is that all our communities are reeling from rising costs, an unstable job market and unprecedented cuts to government programs. This dire situation is only exacerbated by the Administration's irrational tariffs, unlawful immigration actions, and its recent choice to wage war in the Middle East. Against this backdrop, I have continued to fight 24/7 with all of Team Maryland and Governor Moore to push back legislatively, judicially and at the community level. Together we are making progress and turning the tide with respect to public opinion. Part of my Congressional work also entails diving deeper into local matters - even though not directly federal in nature - by using my office to convene different stakeholders, to drive problem solving discussions and to focus on ways to best leverage resources to address pivotal challenges. (This is uniquely needed at present and leans into my years working in non-profits.) I have been doing this through convenings in all the counties over the past quarter, and I will be continuing to work with our counties on solution building with the hopes of releasing tangible best practices and solutions by this summer.

Additionally, I also held two roundtables this past week. The first was a Montgomery County women's business roundtable focused on access to capital, federal contracting, and the Administration policies impacting entrepreneurial and small businesses. The second was a roundtable with the faith leaders of Frederick and Washington County on issues of food security and taking care of our most vulnerable communities with respect to housing, immigration, and health care. Other key topics included promoting respect for different faith communities, volunteering in service of others and the need for world peace. Along this line, my husband John and I were blessed to attend the Arab American Heritage Celebration on Friday and hear from local leaders regarding these topics, their faith traditions and also to enjoy the musical and interactive performances.        

Over the weekend, our district office in collaboration with American Diversity Group and Mayur Mody hosted at Montgomery College a fair to provide residents free health care, preventive screenings and information on health options. We will continue hosting other health fairs across the district to address the large number of families without health coverage - particularly given recent Medicaid cuts and loss of ACA credits. While pushing back against the larger federal issues related to health care access, we must continue to work together with our state and local partners to keep our neighbors healthy.

Many constituents have been writing in about the President's recent inflammatory, obscene and unhinged posts threatening to obliterate the entire civilization of Iran and inquiring if Trump has the necessary capacity or mental fitness to remain in office. Frankly, based on his actions and online postings, I am wondering the same thing. My view was only reinforced this weekend when Trump began online attacks against Pope Leo and the Catholic Church after the Pope made an appeal for world peace based on Christian values. Moreover, President Trump further doubled down today with a posting on Truth Social (since taken down) of an AI generated picture of himself as the Christ figure. I do believe these postings and actions cross the line and that Congress should create an independent body to determine if President has the mental fitness and capacity to remain in office. It is beyond upsetting as Member of Congress, and as a Catholic myself, to see mockery of our Pope, my Catholic faith and an undermining of our country's basic and long held values of civility, decency, respect and integrity. Please let me know your views on this issue.

Aside from the above, I do believe that our country will get through this period through our collective strength and by protecting our free and democratic elections which will be taking place this year. As this is official correspondence from my office, I will not elaborate more. Next week I will be back in session on Capitol Hill, and it will be a busy week. Dialogue of Faith Leaders - Bridging Communities and Addressing Core Needs

This past week was particularly special as faith leaders from Washington and Frederick Counties convened for conversation. Faith leaders are pillars of Maryland life – they offer our communities care, compassion, and connection, and they show up every day for our most vulnerable neighbors. Their voices belong at the table when we are shaping policy that affects real people. We talked honestly about the challenges their congregations are navigating, and more importantly, we talked about solutions. That is what happens when communities come together with purpose. I left that room energized and more committed than ever to fighting for every Marylander.

Celebrating Arab American Heritage Month in April

Last week, I joined the Arab American community in Gaithersburg for a powerful Heritage Month celebration, brought together by the Arab Americans of Montgomery County, the Middle Eastern American Advisory Group, and the City of Gaithersburg. Montgomery County is ranked among the most diverse counties in the nation, and evenings like this remind us exactly why that diversity is our greatest strength. I was proud to stand alongside County Executive Mark Elrich; Montgomery Country Council member Will Jawando; and Council President Natali Fani-Gonzalez as we celebrated the extraordinary contributions of Arab Americans. I was proud to present a Congressional Citation in recognition of their work to uplift this community, and I will continue fighting back against cuts to healthcare and essential programs that disproportionately harm minority communities, cruel immigration policies and actions that don’t reflect our American values. As Governor Moore reminds us, in Maryland, we leave no one behind. 

Survey on Trump’s Fitness for Office

Last week underscored just how powerful words can be. Tone starts at the top, and recent public statements by President Trump regarding potential military operations in Iran have been marked by expletives and dangerous language that I find beyond reckless. Phrases like “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” and “open the F***in’ Strait, you crazy bast***s, or you’ll be living in hell–just watch” do not reflect the gravity, discipline, or restraint expected from a Commander in Chief. Maryland’s Sixth District is home to countless heroes, active-duty service members, veterans, and military families. The President’s words matter; they signal intent and can place our service members in harm’s way.

Additionally, this past weekend President Trump has posted numerous online attacks against Pope Leo and the Catholic Church given their calls for peace, and on Monday morning posted on Truth Social AI generated pictures of himself as Christ. Someone who attacks the Pope and depicts himself as the Christ figure crosses bounds with many of our constituents.

Many in Congress believe this type of dangerous talk and his unhinged postings cross the line and now substantiate that President Trump is no longer mentally fit or competent to remain in office.

My Wellness and Health Fair Shines Spotlight on Community Health and Wellbeing

On Sunday, I was proud to join hundreds of community members at Montgomery College in Germantown for a Community Wellness and Resources Fair, held in partnership with the American Diversity Group.

At a time when prioritizing our physical and mental well-being is more important than ever, this event brought our community together to do just that. Attendees had access to a range of free health services, including vision, blood pressure, bone density, and mental health screenings—all in one place and at no cost. As many 6th District residents do not have health care access, it is critical that we work together to ensure access and keep our families healthy.

Thank you to everyone who came out and to our partners who helped make this meaningful day possible. Together, we are taking important steps toward prioritizing health care access for everyone.

The Maryland Soccerplex: A Winning Asset for Montgomery County

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the Maryland Soccer Plex in Germantown—an impressive facility that, for more than 25 years, has earned recognition as the Central Atlantic’s top soccer complex and is the East Coast’s largest rugby venue. Beautifully maintained and thoughtfully designed, it stands out as a premier destination for youth and amateur sports.

Beyond the fields, it’s clear the Soccer Plex is about much more than athletics. It plays a vital role in driving tourism, supporting local businesses, and strengthening Montgomery County’s economy. The complex hosts nearly 8,800 matches each year and welcomes approximately 650,000 visitors annually making it a true community asset. That’s why I’m proud to cosponsor the Youth Sports Facilities Act of 2025, which would expand access to federal grant funding and allow facilities like the Maryland Soccer Plex to continue growing and serving our region for years to come.

New Survey: Data Centers 

Across the 6th District and Maryland, massive data centers are being built to support Big Tech and AI proliferation. My office is hearing from you all - my constituents - that these data centers are being done without community involvement or transparency about the true impacts on local residents. Most especially, I am fielding complaints about rising energy bills, strains on the local environment and the voracious appetite of these centers on the ever-dwindling supply of water.

Standing Up for Women in Business

Last Friday, I had the privilege of hosting a Women's Business Roundtable in Germantown, brought together by the generosity of Stacy Bell of Minkoff Development, who hosted our conversation. We spoke candidly about the real challenges facing women and minority business owners right now, from frozen Small Business Administration lending programs and proposed rollbacks to fair lending protections, to the chaos of tariffs making "business as usual" unsustainable. 

What I heard in that room will go directly back to Washington to help shape real solutions - because an economy that works for everyone is not just a goal, it is a necessity.

Know Your Rights: Now Available in Six Languages

It is important that all U.S. citizens and immigrants, regardless of legal status, know your rights when interacting with law enforcement or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. My office has a 'Know Your Rights' publication to help you navigate interactions with ICE agents and legal resources. We also have bilingual palm cards that can be printed and carried with you that provide translated instructions to law enforcement officers.

These resources are now available in six languages: English, Spanish, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Korean, French, and Farsi.

Please take a moment to review these resources and share them with your neighbors, friends, and family. Ensuring that everyone knows their rights helps build a safer, more informed community for all.

Celebrating a Special Holiday with Baby Charlie!

For many faith traditions, recent religious holidays have brought families and loved ones together in days filled with renewal, reflection, peace, and community. On Easter, my husband John and I were especially blessed to celebrate with our first grandchild, Charlie who is growing so quickly!

All too often, life moves at such a fast pace that we forget to pause, breathe, and truly appreciate life’s most meaningful moments. I hope the renewal of spring brings abundant blessings to you and to your families and friends.
