Dear Neighbor:

Thank you to the more than 12,000 constituents who joined my Telephone Town Hall on Monday. I believe town halls are at the heart of our democracy, bringing us together to answer your questions, share ideas, and report on the results I’m delivering for you. It is an honor to represent you and carry your voices with me to the Capitol, and I never take that responsibility for granted. If you missed the event, you can watch the recorded livestream.

I am especially grateful to Rep. Jamie Raskin for joining us at the town hall. He represents Maryland’s 8th District and also serves as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, which makes him one of Congress’ leading voices and advocates in holding President Trump and his Administration accountable for actions over the past year, including unauthorized military operations in Venezuela and Iran, and the Justice Department’s handling of the Epstein files.

Congressman Raskin also discussed a bill he recently introduced to establish an independent commission to examine the President’s mental fitness for office. I’ve heard from many of my constituents that the President’s recent words and actions–from threats of extreme violence to profane and inappropriate social media posts, including insults to the Pope–have raised serious concerns. I believe we are at a dangerous moment, and this is a commonsense measure to evaluate his capacity to lead effectively.

We also covered key progress across the district. My office secured $18.4 million in federal funding for 14 community projects across all five counties, supporting senior affordable housing, clean drinking water, pedestrian safety, and expanded rural health care access.

I also highlighted a significant legal milestone: a court-ordered halt to the proposed ICE detention facility in Washington County. This outcome reflects the leadership of Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown and the unified advocacy of residents, faith leaders, small businesses, nonprofits, and local officials who stood together in opposition. While this progress matters, the fight is not over. This Administration continues to show disregard for the impact these actions have on families and communities across the country. That’s why today I cosponsored the Ban Warehouse Detention Act to stop these facilities nationwide from moving forward, because warehouses are for packages–not people. I was proud to stand with Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) on the Hill today to announce this bill, and appreciate Lisa Spivak of Washington County Indivisible for joining us to speak out about what’s happening in our district.

Tomorrow and Saturday, I will be visiting Montgomery, Frederick, and Washington Counties to honor our veterans, celebrate Earth Day, and join our South Asian community in marking the beginning of the Bengali New Year. New Survey: Gas Prices

Since Donald Trump launched a reckless war with Iran, gas prices have sharply increased, going up by roughly one dollar per gallon in a month, the largest jump on record.

Make no mistake, your gas is more expensive because of the war that President Trump has waged in Iran and the havoc this conflict has wrecked on the markets. Marylanders are being forced to pay the price of Trump’s foreign war policies and it’s not right. 

In Congress, I’m fighting to end this dangerous, unnecessary war in Iran and tackle the real problems your family is facing, like the affordability crisis. Your taxpayer dollars should be going towards making your life easier, not used for another forever war in the Middle East.

New Bill: Affordable Child Care for Rural America

As Americans grapple with soaring everyday costs, finding affordable and reliable care is a struggle for working families – especially in rural communities. That is why I joined Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) to introduce the Rural Child Care Facility Expansion Act. The bipartisan bill would create a low-interest loan program to expand child care options for working families in rural communities through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. By making it easier for providers to expand their services, more families will be able to find reliable, affordable childcare in their own communities – because every family deserves a fair shot. 

Ensuring Our National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Remains OPEN

This week, I sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security making it clear - the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, located in our district in Emmitsburg - must remain open. On May 2-3, an annual remembrance weekend will be held at the Memorial to honor 204 firefighters from 43 states who died in the line of duty last year. 

I am grateful to the 20 other lawmakers who joined me in sending this letter, because as a result, the Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that the campus will remain open and memorial activities will proceed as scheduled. I intend to travel to Emmitsburg to join these families at a candlelight vigil next Saturday, and I encourage you and your families to consider attending one of the weekend’s many events.

Standing Up for Women in the Workplace

In 2024, a group of 250 women in Connecticut gathered for a professional development workshop entitled “Embrace Your Authenticity,” which included speeches on leadership, team-building exercises, and networking with executives. What was supposed to be a positive event for a Coca-Cola distributor turned into a political stunt by the Trump Administration, resulting in an unfair Equal Employment Opportunity Commission lawsuit against the company. As a member of the Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC), I led a letter with 17 other lawmakers to the EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas expressing our concern that this lawsuit is another example of this Administration’s attacks on women, dismantling civil rights protections, and mischaracterizing equity as discrimination. The EEOC is supposed to promote equal opportunities, not strip them away from women.

Renewing Our Collective Resolve to Eliminate Terrorism

This week on Capitol Hill, the Embassy of India held a special exhibit–The Human Cost of Terrorism–to highlight the profound and far-reaching impact of terrorism on individuals, families, and communities worldwide. I was honored to stand with Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17), who chairs the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, and my colleagues in Congress to unite in remembrance, accountability, and collective action to prevent terrorism. The costs otherwise are simply too great.

Standing Up for Cancer Research

Advancing cancer research, prevention, and early detection must remain a national priority. This week, the Prevent Cancer Foundation hosted a bipartisan Congressional Families Program reception, where I reaffirmed my strong support for National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute research—as well as for expanding equitable access to preventive care, innovative diagnostics, and emerging biomarker screenings. Early detection not only saves lives; it also lowers health care costs and strengthens our communities and economy. I am grateful to Lisa McGovern, executive director of the Congressional Families Program and wife of Rep. Jim McGovern (MA-02), for her tireless leadership, and to the congressional families, supporters, and health professionals who advocate for this critical work.

Participating in Holi Festivities

My husband John and I loved stopping by the Holi Festival of Color celebration hosted by Urbana STEMM, Asian American Center of Frederick, and Natelli Communities. Holi festivities mark an occasion to reset and renew during the spring season - loved seeing old friends and new and the many colors of the spring seasons. Happy “Holi” day!
