Dear 6th District Neighbors:

Last week’s District Work Period provided a welcome opportunity to travel across Western and Mountain Maryland, meet with community members and business leaders, and experience firsthand what makes our region so special. Our district is defined by people who show up for one another–in moments of hardship and in times of celebration. It is a privilege to represent you.

Three days ago marked the anniversary of the historic floods that struck Western Maryland, including Westernport. The road to recovery hasn’t been easy here, especially as the Trump Administration continues to wage political retribution against Maryland by denying FEMA aid–even though neighboring West Virginia received their funding for the same storm on schedule.

And yet, stories of resilience and determination continue to emerge. On May 2, I was honored to witness Westernport Elementary School reopen its doors, a moment I won't soon forget. My team and I brought 50 children's books from the Library of Congress to help restock classroom shelves. Among them was a copy of Goodnight Moon, a book I once read to my own children and one I pulled from knee-high flood waters in the town library last year. It felt like a full circle moment. I'm proud to stand with Westernport and surrounding communities as the recovery continues, and I'll keep fighting until we get every dollar of aid we deserve.

The rest of the week was just as full. I joined the team at the Upcounty Hub to distribute food to parents and students at Neelsville Elementary in Germantown, gathered with our Islamic community in Gaithersburg for prayer and reflection, and joined Governor Wes Moore in Hagerstown to tour Hitachi Rail's new state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing facility and visit a beautiful new child care facility designed to combat generational poverty. Hitachi Rail: A New Advanced Manufacturing Facility in Hagerstown

On Friday, I had the honor of joining Governor Moore in Hagerstown to tour Hitachi Rail’s new state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing facility, which opened last fall and supports more than 500 jobs. This facility produces trains for public transit systems across the continent, including those serving Baltimore and Washington, and is powered by our state’s world-class workforce. This facility is powered by Maryland’s second-to-none workforce and innovation environment. I’m proud to work with the Governor and our public, private, and philanthropic partners to drive global investment to the Sixth District.

Creating Opportunity for Hagerstown Families

Also in Hagerstown last Friday, the Governor and I toured the newly opened Children’s Learning & Empowerment Center. This child care facility is run by Donna and LaDonna Jones — a mother-daughter duo who strategically designed it to provide a warm and loving environment while also addressing generational poverty and building a legacy of economic mobility in Hagerstown’s South End. 

Its expansion was made possible by the Governor’s ENOUGH Initiative (Engaging Neighborhoods, Organizations, Unions, Governments, and Households) that allowed the project to move forward two years ahead of schedule. Centers like this one are extremely important because across the nation, millions of young children need child care and there are not enough providers to meet the need. In fact, last month, I introduced a new bipartisan bill that would provide low-interest loans to help providers in rural communities.

Congratulations to Donna, LaDonna, and all of the Hagerstown partners who helped make this vision a reality! And thank you to Hagerstown Mayor Bill McIntire, Washington County Commissioner John Barr, and Delegate Matt Schindler for joining me and the Governor.

Feeding Our Neighbors: Supporting the Work of the Upcounty Hub

Last Thursday, my staff and I had the pleasure of volunteering at the Upcounty Hub’s weekly food distribution service at Neelsville Middle School in Germantown. Upcounty Hub’s work is for the community by the community – uniting us in the fight against food insecurity. No one should have to worry about getting food on the table, and I will keep fighting to make sure everyone has access to their basic needs.

Visiting the Islamic Center of Maryland

On Friday, I was honored to visit the Islamic Center of Maryland in Gaithersburg, to tour their Mosque, food pantry, and health clinic. It was lovely to meet with the congregation and join in their Friday prayer. The center offers so many great programs and services to help the community, and I was glad to witness some of the work they do first hand. Learn more about their work.

Celebrating National Nurses Week at Holy Cross Germantown

With last week marking National Nurses Week, my team and I visited Holy Cross Germantown Hospital to meet some of the incredible nurses and health care workers who care for our community every single day. I was also able to celebrate the hospital’s “Around the World Day,” which showcased its diverse staff and highlighted so many cultures, stories, and amazing foods all in one place. It truly reflected the heart of our district. Nurses and health care workers do so much more than provide care — they show up with compassion, patience, and strength when people need it most. We are deeply grateful for all they do for our community.

New Interview: Supporting Our Maryland Farmers

Last week I visited the studios of Agri-Pulse, a leading news source for the nation’s agricultural community. I discussed my concerns about last week’s Farm Bill vote in the House, particularly the impact on Maryland farmers who are being squeezed from every direction by this Administration’s reckless actions, including rising costs from tariffs, immigration-related labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and more. It’s a crisis moment for our farmers, with farm bankruptcies up 46% from this time last year, and this bill leaves farmers without the resources and remedies they need to meet these challenges.

I spoke in particular about the Administration’s push to close the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, a crown jewel of American agricultural science located here in Maryland. For more than a century, it has supported farmers in combating pests and disease, improving nutrition, housing the National Bee Lab, and protecting natural resources. BARC’s work includes critical research on the screwworm parasite, which is currently devastating livestock across the country, including Maryland’s dairy farms.

Answer the Call to Serve: Military Academy Nominations Now Open

I am excited to announce that the Military Academy Nomination Applications are now open! Attending a service academy is both an extraordinary honor and a serious commitment, requiring graduates to serve in the U.S. military for a minimum of five years. It’s a privilege to nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), Naval Academy (USNA), Air Force Academy (USAFA), and Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA).

Over the next few weeks, I’ll highlight individuals from our district whose service to our country began at a military academy. Celebrating All of Our Mothers!

In closing, I hope that all of our moms in the Sixth District had a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday! Being a mother to four beautiful daughters has been the greatest blessing of my life. Yesterday, I also took time to reflect on the memory of my mother, Laurel, and my grandmothers, Edna and Rose. I also celebrated my daughter Summer who is a new mom to my grandson Charlie. Every season of motherhood has shaped me, and I’m grateful for the love and moments we continue to share.
