Dear 6th District Neighbors:

Another busy week on Capitol Hill is underway—our third consecutive week of high-stakes legislative activity—and it’s important to me to use this newsletter to explain my votes to you. As always, please call, write, or stop by my offices if you have thoughts or input on any legislation before Congress. I can’t do this job without your voices.

Last week on the Hill was National Police Week, a time to honor and remember the officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. Over the past three years, America has seen a historic decline in violent crime, which follows on years of Democratic and bipartisan investments in public safety, including law enforcement training, education, community centers, social workers, mental health services, and violence prevention programs. Unfortunately, the White House and Republicans have targeted many of these programs for steep cuts while politicizing agencies like ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. 

I was disappointed by a slate of bills the GOP brought forward that only inflame tensions and further erode public trust, which is why I voted no on each. For example, some proposals sought to weaken bail programs in ways that favor wealthier defendants, undermine court-monitoring programs that are critical to transparency and accountability in our judiciary, and even a Congressional proclamation claiming “leftist activists and progressive politicians” jeopardize public safety. That’s not the spirit of bipartisanship that Americans deserve to see from their lawmakers to support our law enforcement personnel. I would gladly support legislation that delivers meaningful reforms and investments for both officers and the communities they serve, and I will keep fighting because we deserve nothing less.

There were some bipartisan victories, however. I was pleased to join with my House colleagues on Friday to pass a bill to fully fund the Department of Veterans Affairs. Thanks to bipartisan negotiations, we were able to come together and increase investments to support veterans’ health, military families, and critical American military installation infrastructure. In addition, I received good news that a bipartisan bill I introduced last year to lower costs for servicemembers made it through the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. I hope to see it come to the House Floor soon, as it would increase legal and financial protections to active duty servicemembers–benefits that too often go unused due to lack of awareness and overly complicated process.

Another bipartisan bill passed the House that would expand Americans’ access to lower cost gasoline alternatives like E-15 fuel, which costs consumers 10 to 15 cents less per gallon because it is blended with a higher mixture of ethanol which is derived from U.S. corn. This comes as Americans are feeling pain at the pump, fueled by the President’s trade war in Iran and also his trade war that is hurting Americans, particularly our agricultural communities. For example, we have a nationwide increase of farm bankruptcies up 46% over last year. I’m proud to support legislation that lowers costs, strengthens Maryland’s agricultural economy, and delivers real relief for our farmers.

One Year Later: Uplifting Western Maryland Communities Recovering From Disaster

This past week marked one year since the devastating floods that tore through Western Maryland, uprooting the lives of so many. In the face of that disaster, communities across our state came together — neighbors helping neighbors, local leaders mobilizing, and families supporting one another even after federal and FEMA assistance was unjustly denied by the Trump Administration. Last month, my team and I joined local leaders in Westernport to celebrate the grand reopening of the town’s elementary school, and this week we will return to celebrate the reopening of the public library — powerful reminders of a resilient community that continues to rebuild stronger than before.

Democracy Without Intimidation: A New Bill to Protecting Polling Places

It is a consequential moment for our democracy, and Americans are concerned - rightfully so - about their voting rights and the integrity of our elections. Actions at the White House, Supreme Court, and by Republicans in Congress are working to suppress your vote. Just look at news headlines from Administration officials past and present - calls for Trump to deploy federal law enforcement and troops to polling places. We can't let it happen. That's why on the House Floor I've introduced the Democracy Without Intimidation Act. It’s a new bill that would strengthen laws to ban troops and federal law enforcement officers at election polling places and hold government officials who may order such deployments accountable. In Cumberland: A Conversation on Maryland’s Rural Health Workforce

Maryland’s health care workforce is powered by 427,000 people – and they are facing a serious shortage. I joined Maryland Secretary of Health Meena Seshamani’s Rural Health Workforce Development Roundtable at UPMC in Cumberland last week to confront the barriers that hinder our ability to train, recruit, and retain the workforce of tomorrow. This past year and a half has been difficult for patients and providers across Maryland, but through convenings like this, we will overcome these challenges. I stand with you and am always committed to supporting our rural health care systems.

Supporting Our Seniors in Frederick County

I was proud to stand with Governor Moore at Montevue Senior Campus during his “Delivering for Maryland” tour stop in Frederick. Nearly one in five Frederick County residents is over the age of 60, and we face a housing shortage of over 100,000 homes statewide. Governor Moore’s investment of $3 million to help build approximately 84 additional housing units is essential to meeting the needs of Frederick’s growing aging population. Investments like this are exactly how we bring Costs Down and Opportunity Up. I’m proud of the work being done in Maryland at the federal, state, and local levels to expand affordable senior housing and look forward to seeing more meaningful investments like this in the future!

Celebrating Maryland’s 2026 Teacher of the Year!

Last Wednesday, I joined Governor Moore at Monocacy Elementary School in Frederick to celebrate Maryland’s 2026 Teacher of the Year: ALonna Soward-Puryear! She is an extraordinary educator who is making a difference for students and families, and I had the pleasure of meeting her in my office last month about the vital roles teachers play in shaping young minds. Her leadership reflects the very best of Maryland public education. Our teachers shape the future every day, and they deserve to be celebrated and supported.

Celebrating AANHPI Heritage Month on Capitol Hill

A highlight of last week was joining my colleagues in Congress to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month! I’m proud to be a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), where I work alongside my colleagues to advance legislation that supports and uplifts these communities and addresses their needs. At a time when AANHPI communities are facing unprecedented attacks from this Administration, our work to protect, represent, and stand with them is more important than ever.

Kicking Off the Countdown to the FIFA World Cup

The countdown to the FIFA World Cup is officially on! ⚽️��

Last week, I joined with several members of Congress - including Rep. Laura Friedman (CA-30), pictured below - for an event to celebrate the passion, culture, and community that soccer creates around the world. The energy surrounding this tournament is already incredible, and the tourism it is expected to generate across U.S. cities will bring billions in economic activity. June will be an exciting month!
