I hope you and your loved ones had a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend. 

I was truly honored to join National Park Service rangers, veterans, military families, and community members at Monocacy National Battlefield on Monday to remember the brave servicemembers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. We owe an enduring debt of gratitude to the men and women who have given everything to protect our democracy, our values, and the freedoms we cherish. As we approach America’s 250th birthday, their sacrifice calls on all of us to continue working toward a country worthy of their service.

As Congress entered a District Work Period, I returned to Westernport — my second visit this month — to join Governor Wes Moore and local leaders in celebrating the resilience of our Mountain Maryland communities still recovering from last year’s historic floods. I was proud to stand alongside the Governor to mark the reopening of Westernport Elementary, discuss plans for a new library, and highlight other community investments underway. It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, Marylanders from across the state came to Westernport with shovels and supplies to help neighbors recover from their worst flood in two decades. In Maryland, we do not leave people behind, we show up for one another when it matters most.

As families across Maryland continue to be crushed by the affordability crisis–a five-alarm fire fueled by the Trump Administration–it’s going to take all hands on deck to meet the moment. On Tuesday, I joined Montgomery County women alongside Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman and Delegate Lily Qi for a conversation about the rising costs of housing, healthcare, childcare, and other everyday essentials. Ruth Martin of MomsRising, a national nonprofit with local roots advocating for moms and families, underscored the severity of the crisis. She shared the story of a local mother whose family’s health insurance premiums skyrocketed from $64 to $800 a month; a mother of an adult son with disabilities forced to ration food because of soaring grocery prices; and a woman whose husband was laid off and can no longer afford the COBRA coverage he needs for cancer surgery. Stories like these are a reminder that each of us has a role to play — big or small — in coming together to support neighbors in need.

Addressing affordability also means making smart investments that strengthen our communities and create jobs. On Wednesday, Senator Chris Van Hollen and I stopped by Gaithersburg to present a $1 million check for the city to improve pedestrian safety in historic Olde Town. Projects like this make our communities safer, more connected, and more economically vibrant.

We also secured an important bipartisan win on affordability last week on Capitol Hill. As families across America struggle with rising housing costs, increasing housing supply is essential to bringing prices down. That’s why I voted for the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, legislation that expands affordable housing opportunities, cuts red tape, and helps communities build homes faster. This bipartisan legislation fulfills a key pillar of my Costs Down, Opportunity Up affordability agenda, which calls for building 5 million new homes nationwide because lowering costs and expanding opportunity starts with making the American Dream attainable again.

Pushing Back: President Trump’s $1.8 Billion Slush Fund

As you likely saw in national news headlines: President Trump announced a $1.8 billion fund to compensate his political allies, including January 6 rioters. This may be the most shameless example yet of an administration that views taxpayer money as a tool to reward loyalty and punish critics. I’m demanding answers, pushing for oversight, and fighting to stop this abuse of taxpayer dollars. See my interview with Scott MacFarlane of MeidasTouch:

Delivering for Western Maryland: One Year Later

I cannot overstate my pride in the resilience of our Mountain Maryland communities, even in the face of political retribution by President Trump that has led to the denial of FEMA recovery aid.

Last Friday, I joined the Governor to celebrate the reopening of Westernport Elementary School, a site where more than 200 students and staff were rescued–including by boat–during last year’s torrential storm. I had a chance to thank many of these first responders in person down the road at Potomac Fire Company No. 2, where the governor announced an incredible $12 million state investment to help communities rebuild and recover.

New Bipartisan Bill: Advancing U.S. Leadership in Biotechnology

If you’ve driven along the I-270 Tech Corridor, you’ve seen agencies like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that are doing incredible work to advance biotechnology research that benefits healthcare, agriculture, national security, and public well-being.

Last Thursday, I hosted a Capitol Hill forum on “biometrology”--a highly specialized field of study working to establish standards and frameworks that our biotechnology industry needs to create a “common language” to drive  advances in scientific discovery. I unveiled a new bipartisan bill, the Standards and Calibration for American Leadership in Engineering Biology Act–or SCALE Biology Act –that would establish a new federal program at NIST to carry out this research. With this bill, the United States will be better positioned to lead biotechnology innovation, and I’m proud to introduce it alongside my colleagues on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee including Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (CA-17), Rep. Jay Obernolte (CA-08), and Del. James Moylan (Guam).

Affordability Crisis: A Discussion on the Disproportionate Impact on Women

On Tuesday, I was joined by Comptroller Brooke Lierman and Delegate Lily Qi for a Women’s Affordability Event focused on the rising costs facing women and families across Montgomery County. The conversation reinforced what I hear throughout Maryland’s Sixth District: families need leaders focused on lowering costs and expanding opportunity, not partisan fights that make life harder for working people.

On Wednesday, I was proud to join Senator Chris Van Hollen in Gaithersburg to present a $1 million Community Project Funding check for the Gaithersburg Pedestrian Safety Project. This investment will deliver real improvements for students, families, and neighbors in and around the Olde Towne neighborhood – from new sidewalks and crosswalks to traffic calming measures and more. Everyone deserves to live in safety, and I will continue fighting to bring federal resources home to our communities.

Yesterday - May 28 - marked my birthday! I am so grateful to have spent it doing what I love most – serving you – and with my wonderful husband John, my four daughters, and my baby grandson Charlie, who is growing SO fast!

It’s also a big birthday month in my office, and I was so excited to share birthday fun with my legislative director Andrew Donlon and my senior policy advisor Katy Foley.
