Dear 6th District Neighbors,

As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, we have a unique opportunity not only to celebrate our founding, but also to reflect on our history and recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a more perfect union.

That reflection began last week as I had the honor of attending the City of Frederick's Juneteenth National Independence Day Community Celebration. Juneteenth is both a day of remembrance and a celebration of resilience - honoring those who endured the injustices while recognizing the enduring contributions of Black Americans in Frederick and across our nation. It reminds us that the promise of freedom and opportunity has expanded over time and that our work to ensure it reaches every American continues.

Juneteenth also reminds us that the work of equal justice is ongoing. As I shared during Saturday's celebration in Germantown alongside Montgomery County leaders, I remain committed to defending the rights, dignity, and opportunities of every person in Maryland's Sixth District.

Also on Saturday in Montgomery County, I stopped by Gaithersburg to celebrate the reopening of the Pleasant View Historic Site. Founded in 1868 by formerly enslaved Maryland families, Pleasant View served as a school, place of worship, and community gathering space at a time when African Americans were denied basic rights. After years of disrepair and the loss of one building to fire, the site has been restored. I was so thrilled to be joined by Senator Chris Van Hollen at its reopening! Thank you to all those who are working tirelessly to commemorate Maryland’s place in Black history.

As we approach Independence Day, we are reminded that America's story is still being written. The Fourth of July is both a celebration of our founding and an invitation to engage with the history that shaped us. Our district is home to extraordinary landmarks, including the Monocacy National Battlefield, where Union soldiers, though vastly outnumbered, delayed Confederate forces long enough to help protect Washington, D.C., and preserve the Union. It is a powerful reminder that courage and sacrifice have always been central to the American story.

Strengthening Maryland’s National Security Leadership 

Maryland's I-270 Tech Corridor continues to lead the way in innovation, manufacturing, and national security. Last week, I was proud to join with Thales Defense & Security in Clarksburg to celebrate their $4 million investment that will expand their capabilities to develop lifesaving communications equipment for the Army and new detection technologies to identify and neutralize threats underwater.

Thales is committed to serving our troops, and they’re doing it right here in Maryland–and along with their facility in Germantown, they are here to stay–all while supporting 675 high-skilled jobs here in Montgomery County. I am always proud to advocate for district companies.

USDA Disaster Relief Available for Maryland Farmers

The late season freeze that Maryland farmers endured on April 21, 2026 left many facing significant strain and financial uncertainty. As Maryland’s sole voice on the House Agriculture Committee, I have been fighting for the disaster assistance that our farmers across the Sixth District, and Maryland. During a recent hearing, I raised Maryland’s crop losses directly to U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Rollins and urged USDA to approve the disaster designation for Maryland. 

I am pleased to announce that emergency relief is now available for affected farmers in Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, and Allegany counties. I am thankful for this emergency relief, but know our work is not done to ensure every affected farmer receives the support and resources they need to recover, rebuild, and most importantly thrive.

Fighting Back Against Donald Trump’s Ego Branding of National Treasures

While Americans grapple with the rising costs of housing, groceries, health care, and energy, the President has focused on naming landmarks after himself and "Trumpifying" our nation's capital. Families want solutions to their everyday challenges, not monuments to a sitting president.

That's why I introduced legislation to prohibit living presidents from naming federal landmarks after themselves. Joined by Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, we've shown that when we stand up to self-serving abuses of power and put the public interest first, we can make a difference.

Making Your Voices Heard: ICE Detention Warehouse in Washington County

The fight against the proposed ICE detention warehouse in Washington County is far from over. This week, I sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security reflecting the concerns you shared with us, and I joined Maryland's Democratic Congressional Delegation in formally opposing the proposal.

More than 2,000 residents responded to our community survey, and the message was clear: a strong majority oppose this facility. As your representative, I believe it is my responsibility to ensure your voices are heard and, whenever possible, shared in your own words.

Thank you to everyone who participated. If you would still like to make your voice heard, the Department of Homeland Security's public comment period remains open through July 1.

Is Your Tax Return Stuck? My Team is Here to Help

Tax season may be behind us, but for the unlucky few, tax returns are stuck at the IRS. This is where my office comes in, and is one of the many ways that I am fighting for you.

My office specializes in helping constituents resolve matters with federal agencies, including the IRS. This year we have been able to return almost $750,000 of tax returns to Sixth District residents! We are able to help you determine if the return just needs someone at the IRS to push it along to the next step, or if the IRS needs specific information to resolve the roadblock.

Celebrating Our Fathers!

Yesterday was Father’s Day, and my four daughters and I were so happy to celebrate my husband, John, for all that he does for our family.

It is imperative to take a moment to recognize the immeasurable impact that fathers have on the lives of their children. Fathers play a profound role in shaping the next generation, and yesterday gave us an opportunity to honor and uplift them.

From my family to yours, I wish all the great dads across Maryland’s Sixth District a very happy Father’s Day!
