Dear Sixth District Neighbors,
Last week was incredibly busy both on Capitol Hill and across Maryland's Sixth District.
Team McClain Delaney had the opportunity to meet with constituents, celebrate our agricultural communities at county fairs, recognize organizations making a difference in our neighborhoods, and hear directly from the families, farmers, and small businesses I represent. Those conversations continue to shape the votes I take in Congress as your representative.
In Washington last week, the House voted on several bills related to the biggest issues facing our country, including the annual national defense bill, a partisan continuing budget resolution, and legislation claiming to ban insider stock trading by elected officials (which sadly included unrelated voter disenfranchisement provisions). While I strongly support banning insider trading, funding our military, and ensuring that our government stays open, I could not support these bills as portions of the Save America Act kept creeping into these packages as well as many other partisan and unrelated provisions. I also could not justify $95 billion in additional funding for this unauthorized war in Iran (with no articulated strategy or end in sight) while so many families are struggling to make ends meet, facing economic uncertainty, and having their government core services cut at every level.
Week after week, the Administration and Congressional Republicans have failed to prioritize making life more affordable for Americans. The White House is keenly aware that its policies are unpopular. Tariffs and trade wars have driven up prices across the economy. The expiration of Affordable Care Act tax credits has thrown millions off of their health care. It breaks my heart that there has been a 47% increase in farm bankruptcies this year over last, thanks in part to the unlawful war of Choice in Iran. And we’re seeing the impacts of nonsensical cuts to agencies and programs that ensure public health, like the NIH, CDC, FDA, and USDA with recent widespread outbreaks of measles and cyclospora.
Instead of addressing these challenges, Republican leadership in Washington seems singularly focused on influencing this November’s midterm election. They have increased pressure on states to redistrict in GOP favor, to curb or entirely stop mail in ballot votes, and most frustrating to pass the Save America Act (which would disenfranchise many eligible voters, including women who are married and whose last name differs from their birth certificate).
I believe that my colleagues and I should be focused on lowering costs, increasing opportunities, fighting against corruption, and putting working families before partisan politics. We must work together to rebuild trust in our institutions – and I can’t support any legislation that fails to meet the moment.
Although these are challenging times, progress is still possible in Washington. I am proud to share that my bipartisan SCALE Biology Act passed out of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee last week! This bill will create a new research program at the Sixth’s own National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to give biotechnology a home in the agency, and to unlock the next generation of discoveries in the life sciences.
I was also proud last week to speak out in the House Agriculture Committee about protecting children from the growing risks of online sports betting and predictive markets, and to continue meeting with families, farmers, and community leaders across Maryland's Sixth District. With widespread support on both sides of the aisle, Congress has the chance to pass legislation that will ban Members of Congress from trading stocks, fight corruption and begin to restore public trust in their elected officials. Instead of passing common sense bills that already have broad bipartisan support, House Republicans attached Trump’s voter suppression legislation — the SAVE America Act — to a weak bill on congressional stock trading this week. They know full well they don’t have the votes to get the SAVE America Act passed. I stand ready to work with anyone, in either party, to ban Members of Congress from trading stocks while in office and begin to root out corruption.
Legislative Update
SCALE Biology Act Advances Out of Committee
I'm proud to share that my bipartisan SCALE Biology Act advanced out of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. This legislation would establish a dedicated bio metrology program at NIST, strengthening America's leadership in biotechnology while supporting the world-class scientists and researchers across our district.
Maryland's Sixth District is home to one of the nation's premier biotechnology ecosystems, including the I-270 Technology Corridor—often referred to as "DNA Valley"—as well as world-renowned federal research institutions such as NIST, NIH, and the National Interagency Confederation for Biological Research at Fort Detrick. Advancing the SCALE Biology Act reinforces the region's leadership in biotechnology while strengthening America's innovation, US competitiveness and our collective health and well-being.
Fighting for Affordability
As parents prepare for a new school year, they're paying more for school supplies, groceries, health care, and other everyday essentials.
Affordability is the top concern for American families. When prices wildly exceed incomes, families are forced to make painful tradeoffs. Throughout the district, I hear the same thing: parents are stretching every dollar. Families are delaying doctor visits and rationing prescriptions because they can't afford the co-pays. Our food banks are seeing new and more families driven by ever-rising grocery prices and cuts to SNAP benefits. Since the start of Trump’s Iran war gas prices have soared – families in the 6th district have paid an extra $135 million at the pump!
This is not sustainable. This is not America first. In Maryland, we leave no one behind. My Costs Down, Opportunities Up agenda provides a plan to everyday costs and expand opportunities for every family. It's also why I support local organizations whose work helps families put food on the table when costs are too high. I PROMISE to keep fighting to lower costs and expand opportunity for every family in Maryland's Sixth District, and please give feedback on my agenda.
House Agriculture Committee Hearing
In last week's House Agriculture Committee hearing, I raised concerns about prediction markets and the growing risk they pose to children. More than one-third of boys ages 11–17 gambled in the past year, yet prediction markets aren't held to the same youth advertising standards as sportsbooks. When companies promote gambling-like products with colorful, child-friendly ads across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, we have to ask: Who are they really targeting? As youth gambling addiction is becoming a national concern, our kids deserve stronger protections.
Continuing Resolution
I believe it is Congress's responsibility to work collaboratively to keep the government funded and improve the lives of the American people. Our hard-working federal workers deserve stability and certainty in their pay and health care. Sadly, I could not support this continuing resolution because it fails to address affordability or protect health care for Maryland families and left open funding for further DHS and immigration efforts (which are already over funded). This should have been a bipartisan bill, and it is my responsibility to protect taxpayer dollars, demand accountability, and ensure federal funding supports health care, public safety, and the services working families rely on.

Badges for Baseball
Recently, my team was able to attend the 4th annual Badges for Baseball event. Organized by the Frederick County Boys and Girls Club, this event brought together our Frederick County first responders and youth. This ballgame allowed Frederick County youth to meet the people who keep our communities safe. Thank you to the Frederick County Boys and Girls Club and the many community sponsors, without your efforts and aid this event would not have been possible.
Asbury United Methodist Church Community Block Party
One of the best parts of this job is being out in the community with the people I serve. It was an honor to join Asbury United Methodist Church's Annual Community Block Party and present a Congressional Certificate recognizing their incredible commitment to our neighbors. Events like these are a real treat, being able to hear directly from constituents in the setting of a day of community joy fills me with such satisfaction and pride.

Allegany Farm Bureau Summer Picnic and County Fair Kickoff
In the District last week, Team McClain Delaney was able to attend the Allegany Farm Bureau’s summer picnic to celebrate the opening of the Allegany County Fair. Agriculture is the backbone of the Sixth District and as the only Maryland Representative on the Agricultural Committee these events are invaluable to the work my team and I do. There’s nothing like a summer picnic!
Garrett County 250th Celebration
The Garrett County 250 Commission put on an incredible celebration of our nation's 250th birthday, a true testament to the pride Garrett County takes in its heritage. The day featured a parade led by George Washington himself, remarks from local speakers, booths from nonprofits and community organizations, and a ceremonial flag unfurling. The Commission capped off the festivities with a drone show. I'm glad my team could join in such a patriotic celebration.
Washington County Fair
Team McClain Delaney had a great time at the Washington County Fair! A county fair is a staple of the agricultural industry, and a great way for the community to learn more about the importance of agriculture. My staff enjoyed working in Washington County Farm Bureau's Shake and Cream Stand, serving ice cream to fair goers. The team had the opportunity to walk the barns, meet constituents and elected officials, and watch the Truck and Tractor Pull! Many thanks to the Washington County Farm Bureau for the opportunity to join them!
Delivering for Maryland's Sixth District
Helping Marylanders navigate the federal government is one of my office's most important responsibilities. This week my office brought $15,000 back to the district!
