Dear Sixth District Neighbor,

With the headlines focused on politics lately, it's easy to get swept up in the news coming out of Washington. But my focus remains where it has always been: on the people who call Maryland's Sixth District home. That means making sure you know your rights, know where to turn for help, and know that your Representative is paying attention.

That commitment matters most in difficult moments. Last month, ICE conducted an operation that kept federal agents in one of our neighborhoods for nearly 40 hours. Reports of ICE vehicles driving onto a sidewalk and striking an observer, along with the use of force against Frederick residents, deserve a thorough and independent review. I have been demanding answers, and I've joined my colleagues in Maryland's congressional delegation in calling for an independent investigation. In times like these, knowing your rights is more important than ever. My office has gathered resources to help, which you can find on our Immigration Issues and Resources page.

My team recently partnered with CARECEN to host a virtual Know Your Rights Workshop, where constituents had the opportunity to ask questions directly and better understand the civil liberties and protections the Constitution guarantees.

Knowing your rights matters at the ballot box, too. Every eligible voter should be able to cast a ballot safely and without fear of intimidation. To help you prepare, my office has put together an election toolkit, What to Expect When You Go to the Polls, with information on how to find your polling place, what happens once you get there, and what to do if you run into a problem. And if anything on Election Day doesn't feel right, please reach out to your local election officials or call my office for assistance..

I've also been spending time listening to the next generation. Affordability remains at the forefront of Americans’ minds, and my College Tour is an opportunity to hear directly from students about the costs and challenges shaping their futures. A few weeks ago, I visited Hood College; next up is Allegany College of Maryland. At Hood, students also raised questions about artificial intelligence and the jobs of tomorrow, which stayed with me during recent AI and biotechnology summits.

These technologies hold enormous promise for medicine, our economy, and the jobs of tomorrow, and I want Maryland to lead that innovation. As AI develops at remarkable speed, we need thoughtful guardrails, and we need to stay vigilant so that progress serves people, not the other way around.

Lastly, for high school students looking to put their talents to work, check out the Congressional App Challenge and opportunities to attend a U.S. service academy. Applications for a service academy nomination through my office close October 15. You’ll find more information on both programs below.

Whatever you're facing, whether it's a question about your rights, trouble with a federal agency, or a concern about your polling place, you do not have to navigate it alone. My website includes a Know Your Rights resource, and my office is always just a phone call away. We are here to support you.

Maryland Innovation Summit
Last week, I was privileged to attend the inaugural Maryland Innovation Summit in Baltimore, a one-day convening of leaders from industry, philanthropy, government, and academia. We discussed the future of AI and what guiding principles are appropriate for protecting Marylanders. As a member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee as well the subcommittee for research and biotechnology I know how important maintaining our technological superiority is. AI is here and it is here to stay but that does not mean it should operate without guardrails. I support Governor Moore’s framework for AI protection as it centers three main aspects: protecting people, protecting workers, and protecting our children.

Our tools must work for us, and there must be accountability. That is why I’ve cosponsored the Doctors Not AI Act, so that only a doctor decides what care is appropriate– not software. I also co-lead the bipartisan Algorithm Accountability Act. If a company builds a product that hurts people, it should answer for the harm they cause. Maryland will continue to lead and drive innovation but we must do this safely and responsibly. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to meet and discuss this with so many thought leaders and innovators. Thank you to all who made this event possible.

American Growth Summit
Last week I was delighted to attend the second annual American Growth Summit in Washington, D.C., which convened leaders from government, business, finance, and technology to explore the policies and innovations shaping America’s economic future. I was able to discuss the next decade of U.S. growth and how America can build, invest, and innovate quickly enough to turn advances in AI into lasting economic opportunity. The next decade of growth must include all of America –  plans that exclude places like Garrett County are incomplete to say the least. Lasting economic growth must rely on continuous effort in regards to regulation and construction. I am thankful to Niala Boodhoo for joining me to discuss these issues with her and to explain my plans for the future.

ENOUGH Initiative Announcement with Governor Wes Moore
Last week, Team McClain Delaney joined Governor Wes Moore as he announced the newest projects included in his ENOUGH statewide initiative as part of his “Delivering for Maryland” tour. The ENOUGH Initiative (Engaging Neighborhoods, Organizations, Unions, Governments, and Households) was created to address child poverty in Maryland. In the Sixth District, this initiative will allow doctors on Frederick’s Golden Mile to prescribe produce for families, paid for with funding from federal grants. For the 2027 fiscal year, the Sixth District will receive $5.4 million in ENOUGH grant funding. This is spectacular. Now, hard working families will no longer have to choose between the produce aisle and the gas tank. At the end of the day, you are what you eat– fresh produce allows our communities to be stronger, healthier, and more prepared for life.

Supporting our National Parks
Our National Parks are cornerstones of the history and beauty of our district. They enshrine our local character and preserve our treasures for future generations. That is why I am happy to announce that the National Park Foundation has awarded $4.7 Million in grants through its Open OutDoors for Kids program. This program helps create and expand educational experiences for students to learn about and visit national parks. Specifically, this program is providing support for educational resources at both Catoctin Mountain Park and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. These resources allow for field trips, classroom engagements, and other educational programming. I will continue to champion programs like these in Congress so that coming generations can appreciate the history of Maryland’s Sixth.

Last week, my team attended the grand opening of Lightsome Coffee and Cafe in Hagerstown! Congratulations to Molly, Maddy, Timmy, and the whole team for their continued success and new space. Small businesses truly make a community thrive, and your entrepreneurship and passion shines through with every cup served. Thank you for inspiring young adults to follow their dreams and work hard to see them through. Cheers!

City of Hagerstown and Antietam Exchange Club Time Capsule Burial

Image

Back in July, the City of Hagerstown and the Antietam Exchange Club welcomed hundreds of residents to the Hagerstown Field House to open the 1976 Time Capsule. Attendants of all ages gathered to see what items had been buried for the last 50 years as well as to compile new items for the next generation. Recently, city staff and Antietam Exchange Club members gathered to watch a new capsule be placed in Public Square, between Washington and Potomac streets in the heart of Hagerstown. In 2076, the whole process will repeat again with new memories and discoveries to be shared.

Susan Eisenhower Visits Hood College

Image

Last Wednesday evening, my team was excited to be back at Hood College for a special conversation with Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of our 34th President, the late Dwight D. Eisenhower! Moderated by the brilliant Dr. Nisha Manikoth, Eisenhower shared honestly how her experiences as a young woman shaped her interest for leadership, international relations, and open communication. Stories about her grandfather gave an intimate perspective on how he navigated through the many wars and international conflicts faced during his time in the Army and in office. Thank you to the Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership, President Ricker’s office, the Department of Political Science, Division of Community and Inclusivity, and the Hood College Graduate School for hosting an informative and memorable event for the community.

College and Economic Opportunity Tour: Next Stop, Allegany
Get ready for the next stop on the College and Economic Opportunity Tour! Today, my team and I will be headed to Allegany College of Maryland. With how well our previous tour went I am looking forward to meeting with staff and students once again. From four-year colleges to workforce training programs, I am committed to meeting students where they are, listening to their priorities, and taking their voices back to Congress.

Team McClain Delaney is Here for You

Serving you is my top priority, and nobody should have to fight the federal bureaucracy alone to get the benefits they rightfully earned.

Just last week, one of our caseworkers brought back $500,000 to the Sixth via Employee Retention Credits for businesses across our district. This victory has brought our caseworker, Benton Anthony, up to $1.7 million in returned funds back to the Sixth in only one year! We are here to help, and quite frankly, we are pretty darn good at it.

We take on federal inquiries every single day because my team and I are determined to deliver for the people of Maryland’s 6th District. Whether you need help with veteran benefits, Social Security, passports, or any other federal agency, my office stands ready to help everyone in our community get the answers they deserve.

If you or someone you know is struggling to get a response from a federal agency, please don't hesitate to reach out. You can stop by my district office in Frederick or give us a call at (301) 926-0300. We are here to work for you!

Warmest regards,
