A number of Marylanders may have recently received scam phone calls involving "urgent messages" from individuals impersonating the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Social Security Administration (SSA).
You should never give these callers any personal information, such as your Social Security Number, and you should hang up immediately. Never wire money or add money to a pre-paid debit card to pay for any official government service. If you receive a phone message, do not return the phone call.
The SSA, SSA Office of the Inspector General, and IRS will generally NEVER contact the general public requesting personal information over the phone.
Government employees are not allowed to threaten you to obtain personal information or payments.
If you receive a suspicious phone call regarding social security benefits, please report your case online at https://oig.ssa.gov/report or https://identitytheft.gov/ssa, or by calling the Office of the Inspector General's fraud line at (800) 269-0271. To report suspicious calls regarding the IRS, contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration online at https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml.
