News from Congresswoman Scholten

Dear constituent,

Communities across West Michigan came together this weekend to commemorate Juneteenth – the day where the last enslaved people in the US learned of their freedom. Stories were shared about generations of African Americans, and we took time to discuss our shared vision for a more equitable future for all Michiganders. Thank you to all of the organizations who had my team and I out to celebrate!

COFFEE WITH THE CONGRESSWOMAN

Welcoming organizations, businesses, and families to Washington is one of my favorite parts of my job. Hearing about the ways that I can serve local small businesses, union members, and nonprofits over coffee and donuts at my first "Coffee with the Congresswoman" was the highlight of my week. Thanks to everyone who came out to meet with my team!

FAA REAUTHORIZATION HEADS TO HOUSE FLOOR FOR A VOTE

As a Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I took part in marking up a key bill that will reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This means instituting key protections for travelers, bolstering our aviation workforce, and ensuring that West Michigan airports are receiving necessary infrastructure updates. Now that the bill passed unanimously through committee, it’ll head to the House Floor. I’ll continue to provide updates as this critical legislation passes through the legislative process!

SHADOWING WEST MICHIGAN MEDICAL RESIDENTS AND STUDENTS

Thanks to Trinity Health, Corewell Health, and Michigan State University, I spent Friday shadowing MSU medical residents and students. Learning how the next generation of medical professionals are trained is so important to my advocacy efforts in Congress. Our medical residents are on the frontlines of serving our neighbors and keeping them healthy, and these rounds were a hands-on lesson in their work that I’ll never forget!

Watch my remarks about the wins I secured for West Michigan in this bill here.

WORKING FOR YOU IN WASHINGTON

My team’s number one priority is working for you. This week, I signed on as a cosponsor of eight pieces of legislation, directly responding to the calls and e-mails of West Michiganders about the important and impactful legislation they care about. Bills I signed onto include H.R.2976, The Child Care for Working Families Act, which would increase the supply of child care in communities like ours and lower costs of care, and H.R.2403, The Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2023, which would strengthen federal background checks in efforts to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them. You can always learn more about my legislative actions here.

Sincerely,
