Dear Neighbor –
What a year it has been! As we close out 2023 and enter into the new year, I want to thank you again for the opportunity to serve as your voice in Congress.
It’s an honor to represent you and fight for the community that raised me – and the one where I raise my boys.
This has been a big first year in office for me and my team. That’s why I’m so excited to share our 2023 End of Year Report!

Here are some of the highlights:
- We returned more than $7.6 million to West Michigan families from federal agencies through our casework program.
- We helped more than 1,400 West Michiganders with federal agencies – whether it was helping them get their passport, getting their tax return from the IRS, or securing medals from their service to our country.

Some of our best casework, though, doesn’t come with monetary value. One of the highlights of my term so far was honoring Specialist Four Lloyd Slack, a hero who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country while serving in Vietnam. His mother, Lola Mondy, never received the medals he was owed. My team got to work to retrieve them and were able to present them to her before she died.
- I secured more than $12.3 million to invest in our community – including millions to replace all harmful lead pipes in Grand Rapids, plant nearly 15,000 trees, and revitalize the public bus system.
- Being available and responsive to your concerns is a top priority for me in Congress. This year, I responded to more than 33,000 emails from West Michiganders! I also had one of the fastest response rates in Congress. If you haven’t reached out to me yet, I’d love to hear from you. You can contact me here.
- I connected with more than 9,700 West Michiganders through my public town halls! Stay tuned for upcoming times to connect in 2024.
- I cast more than 700 votes on the House floor and 70% of my votes were bipartisan.
- I introduced 8 bipartisan bills to tackle the issues facing West Michigan – including bills to crack down on employers who break child labor laws, level the playing field for small businesses, and make sure Coast Guard servicemembers get paid in the event of a government shutdown.
My team and I are just getting started! Thank you to everyone who has reached out and connected with me this year. I can’t wait to connect with more in the new year.
From my family to yours, we wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy New Year! As always, it's an honor to serve you, West Michigan.
Sincerely,
Hillary Scholten Member of Congress
