This is how we get it done. Our office secured $19,680,366 in federal investments!

This is the total amount of federal funding we obtained through Community Project Funding. These resources are going directly to our local communities and organizations.

Fighting for our fair share of resources is critical in ensuring we have real investments that will make our community healthier, safer, stronger, and build ways to help people thrive.

Here is a list of the 15 projects that will directly benefit our communities:

Education & Workforce Development

$3,500,000 for the Expansion of Service-Learning for Wayne-Westland Community Schools

Expanding learning opportunities for our families and students in the district is how we ensure everyone has the resources to thrive. This funding to one of our school districts will provide essential benefits for early head start and college readiness support for our families and students. The funding will also expand training access for firefighters to ensure our communities continue to grow our workforce and provide essential services.

$2,100,000 for the Garden City Community Center Rehabilitation Project

Creating community spaces improves access to social, educational, and health services for our residents. The over $2 million in funding will be used to construct a new entrance and an athletic gymnasium at the former Radcliff Junior High School in Garden City to provide social service programs for seniors and youth. 

This center will be accessible and free to all residents within Garden City and surrounding communities. This project will allow Garden City to serve more residents through expanded outreach for services and programs for low-income folks and residents with special needs in the region. The center will house: Meals on Wheels for Homebound Seniors, the Senior Alliance, the Youth Assistance Program for Troubled Youth, and the Youth Prevention Program for At Risk Kids.

$1,000,000 for the Romulus Small Business Assistance & Workforce Development Project

Small businesses are the heart of our cities. This investment will fund the Romulus Small Business Assistance and Workforce Development project. This will assist Romulus’ small business owners struggling to rebound financially from the pandemic, help revitalize the struggling downtown area with small business opportunities, and engage in workforce development support programs for Romulus residents.

$206,000 for the Dearborn Heights Library for Computer and Electronics Infrastructure Replacement and Mobile Book Services Project

I grew up with the bookmobile coming through our neighborhood and it helped me get access to books that ignited my imagination. This funding will replace the outdated computer and electronics infrastructure as well as the mobile book services project. These changes will have a direct impact on the lives of our residents and promote literacy and learning.

Health Care

$1,500,000 for the American Indian Health & Family Services New Facility & Campus for Health and Wellbeing

The American Indian Health & Family Services will construct a new facility and campus for health and wellbeing to help provide better health care to our community. Our goal is to build up holistically healthy individuals and neighborhoods that are connected to their culture. This facility will create belonging and improve the wellness of our residents on multiple levels.

This project will allow American Indian Health & Family Services to continue to serve the 55,000 Urban Native American individuals living in the seven-county region of Southeast Michigan and expand their services to more families. In addition, the new facility will provide more services to patients and clients that are underserved from the surrounding neighborhoods.

$500,000 to Covenant Community Care in Detroit for Facilities and Equipment

Covenant Community Care will complete construction on a 10,000 square foot new health center building at 17625 Joy Road which will expand health care facilities in the community with this funding. The new clinic will offer primary medical, dental, and behavioral health services to the Cody-Rouge neighborhood and surrounding communities.

Covenant’s new building will increase access to health care services (particularly dental care that is not offered at their current clinic) to people living in a part of Detroit that is designated by the Health Resources and Services Administration as a Health Professional Shortage Area (medical, dental, and mental health professionals) and a Medically Underserved Area.

$496,000 to Complete the Multi-Service Facility for Health and Human Services Project in Highland Park

This funding will help complete the Multi-Service Facility for Health and Human Services Project in Highland Park. The project will provide children and adults with a complete facility that promotes physical fitness, wellness, and community well-being. It will also increase access to preventative measures including health and fitness resources, dance classes, cardio equipment, and walking clubs.

$281,200 for the Health Unit on Davidson Avenue for The HUDA Clinic Improvement Project

HUDA Clinic in Detroit will use this funding to upgrade their facilities and health equipment to provide free comprehensive health care services to those who are uninsured or underinsured.

The HUDA Clinic is an essential resource in providing free quality primary care services and other preventative health measures to families in need. The HUDA Clinic Improvement Project will allow service expansion for their most requested specialty services, specifically dental health. Funding will also help to provide preventive care and dental work to treat more patients in need of this free service. The HUDA Clinic provides critical health services to underserved populations, bridging the gap for health disparities in the district. By increasing access to health care, the HUDA Clinic Improvement Project will improve health equity in the community.

Infrastructure

$2,500,000 for the Grandmont Rosedale Mixed-Use Development for Low-Income Senior Housing and Commercial Space in Detroit

We are experiencing a housing crisis. This funding will support the Grandmont Rosedale Corporation Mixed-Use Development for Low-Income Senior Housing and Commercial Space in Detroit. The project will help address the need for housing by providing 42 units of affordable senior housing for residents within the community, providing accessible amenities to the neighborhood’s residents through new commercial opportunities for growing small businesses, and create a community hub and gathering space for year-round programming for all of our residents.

$1,386,216 for the Joe Louis Greenway West Chicago Connector

Green space must be part of neighborhood redevelopment. The Joe Louis Greenway significantly expands the region’s bicycle and pedestrian connectivity. This funding is for the West Chicago Connector project, which includes construction of non-motorized facilities along West Chicago, Cloverlawn Avenue, and Oakman Boulevard, for approximately one quarter of a mile. Included in the construction are ADA features, improved lighting, and Wi-Fi. This connection will increase safety for non-motorized users, reduce blight, and increase mobility for the immediate underserved population.

$741,450 for the Rehabilitation and Upgrade of Pump Station 182

Flooding continues to be a huge challenge for our families. This project is to support the Rehabilitation and Upgrade of Pump Station 182. This is part of a 10-year asset management plan to rehabilitate and upgrade 41 pump stations in Wayne County. Funding will be used to upgrade this pump station with higher pump capacity, as well as electrical, mechanical, and structural components. The pump station improvements will help to reduce flooding issues due to aging infrastructure. The technological advantages of today’s pump stations make replacement a good option for aging units, especially when severe weather strikes that can devastate communities and destroy our homes. 

$600,000 for the Southfield Road Pedestrian Improvement Project in
Ecorse

Improving the well-being of our residents means walkable neighborhoods. This funding is for the City of Ecorse Southfield Road Pedestrian Improvement Project that improves the pedestrian right-of-way along the half mile stretch of Southfield Road in the traditional downtown area of Ecorse.

The project, which advances the City of Ecorse’s vision and priorities, improves the walkability of Southfield Road and promotes improved health outcomes, especially for the nearly 14,000 residents within a 1-mile radius of the project area, and stimulates the activation and rehabilitation of vacant and underutilized commercial spaces along Southfield Road.

Recreation

$2,000,000 for the Kessey Fieldhouse and Rouge River Boat Launch Capital Improvements in Melvindale

Supporting access to recreation is what families want. This funding to the City of Melvindale will be invested in the Kessey Fieldhouse and Rouge River Boat Launch. The facility will provide several recreation sporting events for young adults and families, in addition to weekly senior services!

The facility will not only serve Melvindale residents but also other neighboring communities. This will also allow the City of Melvindale to further the partnership with Friends of the Rouge to provide more safe and accessible programming for families who would like to enjoy the beauty of our region’s Blueway.

$2,000,000 for the Redford Township Wellness Center

We are helping build Redford Township’s first recreation and wellness center to support the overall health and well-being of our residents. The center will include both physical and wellness components, such as a gymnasium, indoor walking track, state of the art fitness facility, classrooms for wellness and health education classes, fitness, and dance rooms. 

Access to opportunities to improve the mental and physical health of residents can be limited and are often not affordable. By constructing a township owned and operated Recreation and Wellness Center, the township will be better equipped to address the health needs of residents and improve long-term health outcomes.

$869,500 for the Beechwood Center Renovation in River Rouge

Beechwood Center is the heart of the City of River Rouge and the only operating recreation center for youth in the community. This funding will be essential in restoring the building to address the inefficient systems, collapsing roof that has caused extreme damage on the interior of the building, and to create a community space for River Rouge’s young people all year round.

Improvements to the Beechwood Center will play a pivotal role in creating a safe place for underserved youth within the community and provide a place for the city’s children to stay healthy, active, and engaged. It will create and serve as the first hub dedicated for community social and educational activities for youth after school.
