Stakeholder Perspectives on Agricultural Trade

On Thursday, I was proud to chair our first hearing for the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Nutrition, Foreign Agriculture, and Horticulture. We heard from witnesses, including NPPC President-Elect and Easton, MN native, Lori Stevermer, on the importance of ag trade.

I asked industry leaders about the potential impact of foreign animal diseases on our nation’s food supply, as well as Mexico’s unjust attempt to ban U.S. genetically modified corn, going against our trade programs, and putting $5 billion worth of U.S. exports at risk.

It is imperative the trade programs in Title III work efficiently and can be fully utilized by our producers. As we continue to gather information from stakeholders ahead of the next Farm Bill, we need to have a clear picture of the trading economy our producers are engaged with—day in and day out.

Border Security is National Security

This week, the House passed H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act. The unprecedented crisis at our southern border is a direct result of the Biden Administration’s failed policies that are putting our national security at risk and have created a humanitarian crisis.

It is past time that we get serious about securing our border and restoring the rule of law in our country, which is exactly what this bill does. I was proud to join my House Republican colleagues in voting to pass the Secure the Border Act, which provides real, common-sense solutions to secure our border by:

  • Resuming construction of the southern border wall
  • Modernizing border security technology
  • Alleviating staffing shortages for the Customs and Border Patrol
  • Supporting local law enforcement agencies to enhance border security

SCOTUS Ruling on Proposition 12

In a ruling issued this week, the Supreme Court upheld California's animal housing law, which bans the sales of pork coming from sows confined in gestation crates.
This ruling will essentially force the pork industry in southern Minnesota to adhere to California's standards and impose costly, burdensome regulations on hog farmers that add no value for animals or consumers.

Congressional Art Competition

I'm excited to announce that this year's winner of the MN-01 Congressional Art Competition is Karlee Wynia, a senior at Kasson-Mantorville High School.

Her artwork "Mabel A Young Herd Leader" will be on display in the halls of the U.S. Capitol for an entire year, proudly representing Minnesota's First District. Congratulations, Karlee!
