Dear Friend,

Over the past few years, the Internal Revenue Service has had serious failures in protecting taxpayer data. In 2022 alone, the IRS mishandled or leaked millions of taxpayer records. This record of abuse and impropriety should not be rewarded with increased funding and staff to go after families. Instead, we should be responding with heightened transparency and accountability.

Nevertheless, last year Democrats exploded the size and scope of the IRS with their so-called “Inflation Reduction Act.” This legislation provided funding for 87,000 new IRS enforcement agents, this staffing increase would make the IRS larger than the Pentagon, State Department, FBI, and Border Patrol combined.

These new agents were to be hired with a clear directive – investigate and audit more working Americans. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, these 87,000 IRS agents will cause audit rates to “rise for all taxpayers.” Democrats claim that increased IRS scrutiny would only impact the wealthiest taxpayers, but that is patently false. A Joint Committee on Taxation study reports that 90% of the money raised from under-reported income would likely come from Americans making less than $200,000 per year.

Fortunately, the new Republican House Majority has already taken action to address Democrats’ supercharged IRS. Last week, we passed the Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act, which rescinds all new IRS funding intended to target middle-class families and small businesses. House Republicans are hitting the ground running, making good on our Commitment to America and standing up for working families.

Americans expect and deserve a government that’s accountable to the people – not one that treats them as a target. We will remain ever vigilant against any attempts to supercharge the IRS to target the middle class with more audits, rather than improve customer service.

Sincerely,
