Dear Friend:

I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day weekend! After a week of in-district visits, meetings with constituents, and committee hearings, I will be back in Washington this week for votes and hearings. As always, my office is open and ready to serve constituents of Minnesota's Seventh Congressional District! Please do not hesitate to get in touch if there is anything I can do to help.

Sincerely,

Protecting Small Businesses

The Paycheck Protection Program has been a godsend for so many businesses across the district. While Congress has exempted forgiven PPP loans from federal income taxes, Minnesota remains one of only eleven states that do not exempt the funds from state income taxes.

I joined my Minnesota Republican colleagues in calling on Governor Walz and state legislative leaders to exempt these forgiven PPP loans from state income taxes. I believe this would be an important step in supporting the small businesses that have suffered during the pandemic, and am hopeful state leaders will take swift action.

Biden's Tax Increases

President Biden unveiled a $2.3 trillion climate agenda cloaked as "infrastructure," which would dramatically alter our economy and fund a litany of progressive wish list items—with very little money going toward actual infrastructure, such as roads or bridges. The president also released a $1.8 trillion proposal that calls for universal pre-K and two years of free community college.

Not only would the president's proposals saddle the next generation with even more debt and balloon the federal government's reach in our lives, they would also raise taxes for many hardworking Americans. Our economic recovery is already stalling because of President Biden's anti-growth policies, and these proposed massive tax increases will only make it worse.

Defending Stepped-Up Basis

President Biden’s plan to eliminate stepped-up basis and assess capital gains taxes at death would be devastating for the agricultural economy. Congressman Adrian Smith of Nebraska and I led a letter to congressional leaders, signed by 130+ of our colleagues, opposing the president's proposal.

Without a step-up in basis, the next generation of farmers will absorb massive tax increases just to continue their family farm. I cannot and will not support a plan that pads the federal coffers at the expense of America’s farmers.

Congressional Art Competition

The deadline to enter the Congressional Art Competition has been extended! Submissions will now be accepted until 5:00 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. The Congressional Institute, which officially hosts the competition in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer and the Architect of the Capitol, has decided to extend the deadline for submissions.

All high school students are invited to participate in this longstanding U.S. Capitol tradition, which is an excellent opportunity for students from across the district to showcase their creativity and hard work. The competition is open to all public, private, charter, and home school students in grades nine through 12.

I met with leaders from Life-Science Innovations and Nova-Tech Engineering at their offices in Willmar. We discussed how their innovative equipment is used around the world and how we can grow rural, family-owned businesses like these.
