Extreme Drought
I visited Four Hill Farms near Barnesville this week, where I saw firsthand the many, many challenges facing farmers in these extreme drought conditions. I will continue to do all that I can on the federal level to make sure Minnesotans have the resources they need to recover from the drought.
Thanks to Jake & Nathan Thompson for hosting us, as well as Clay County Commissioner Jenny Mongeau and representatives from Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative, AgCountry Farm Credit Services, and R.D. Offutt Farms for joining us.
As a result of the extreme drought gripping much of Minnesota, farmers are facing tremendous challenges. I have compiled a list of the many federal and state resources available to assist farmers, ranchers, communities, and businesses in navigating these challenges and working towards a quick recovery.

Farmfest
I was glad to be back in-person at Farmfest in Redwood County this week! After participating in a panel about the future of agriculture, I made my way around the Farmfest grounds. It was great to see folks from the Minnesota Pork Producers Association, Minnesota Corn Growers Association, Minnesota Farm Bureau, Minnesota Soybean Growers Association, AgCountry, University of Minnesota Extension, AURI, Compeer Financial, and more! Eviction Moratorium
Last week, the Biden Administration announced a new moratorium on evictions. Despite the Supreme Court’s clear ruling that they did not have the authority to unilaterally extend the eviction moratorium, Biden’s unelected bureaucrats defied the judicial branch and did it anyway. The moratorium ties the hands of landlords across the country who are already reeling from the past 18 months, depriving them of any legal recourse to enforce rent obligations. Not only does this increase the likelihood of future shortages in affordable housing, but it also stokes the existing inflation in rental prices as landlords cope with the losses in revenue.
Congress has repeatedly acted to provide relief to the American people, including allocating $46 billion in rental assistance. With multiple safe and effective vaccines available to all who want one, it is time to stop disincentivizing people from getting back to work. |
Other Notes
- Congratulations to Marcus Construction of Willmar, which recently received the 2021 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award! They are one of just 15 employers nationwide honored for their support of National Guard and Reserve employees and their families. Well done!
- I signed a letter from Iowa Rep. Randy Feenstra urging President Biden to abandon his plan to limit like-kind exchanges—a move that could have devastating impacts on family farmers and family-owned businesses, and would result in higher taxes for the farmers and main street businesses that help drive economic growth in rural areas.
- I joined my Republican colleagues from Minnesota in sending a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, expressing our concerns that Canada may be bending U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) rules to unfairly benefit its own dairy industry at the expense of American producers.
- I co-sponsored legislation from Rep. Dusty Johnson of South Dakota to allow for emergency haying and grazing on CRP lands during the primary nesting season.
- I signed a letter with a bipartisan group of my colleagues asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ensure small and regional meat processors can access the newly-announced meat processing grant program.

I visited Clinton to tour the damage from the recent grain elevator fire. I was joined by State Senator Torrey Westrom, State Representative Jeff Backer, Mayor Greg Basta, Big Stone County Commissioner Wade Athey, Big Stone & Stevens County EMS Director Dona Greiner, and others. This is a tragic loss for the community. Thank you to the first responders from Clinton and throughout the region. I am grateful there were no fatalities or serious injuries. My staff and I stand ready to assist in any way that we can as the community works toward recovery. |
