Dear Friend:

This was a very busy week in Washington. On Wednesday, I participated in a House Judiciary Committee Markup where I had the chance to address the problematic red flag law known as the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2021. This bill is an attempt by Democrats to use the federal government to intimidate gun owners. Our local authorities are struggling to maintain enough staff to keep criminals off the streets, and yet the Democrats are tone-deaf enough to ask them to begin tracking down law-abiding gun owners.

On Thursday, the Rules Committee was given a new, incomplete draft of the socialist spending bill. This bill, which would cost anywhere from $1.75 trillion to $4.5 trillion, covers everything from tax credits for luxury electric SUVs to millions of dollars in spending on "desert fish conservation". This everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach to spending is not what America needs right now as we face rising prices and record inflation. Included in this bill is also the IRS surveillance program, which will cost taxpayers $80 million a year and result in the IRS spying on the bank accounts of every American spending or making more than $28 a day, or $600 a month. I did have the opportunity to ask the Ways and Means Committee Chairman about this proposed program and share my thoughts on the path the Democrats have taken in their efforts to push this legislation through the House. Congressional App Challenge

DEADLINE TOMORROW

Students from Minnesota’s 7th District are invited to participate in the annual Congressional App Challenge! You have to have your application in by Monday for your app to be considered!

The Congressional App Challenge accepts computer programs (apps) written in any programming language, such as C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, or “block code,” and for any platform, including desktop/PC, web, tablet, mobile, raspberry Pi, or other devices. Students may register as individuals, either in the district in which they reside or the district in which they attend school, or as teams made up of no more than four students, though at least half of the teammates must be eligible to compete in the district in which they are participating.

The deadline for submitting an app is November 1, 2021.

Spring Internships

This Week in Ag

This week, I joined an Agriculture Biotechnology: 21st Century Advancements and Applications hearing with the House Agriculture Biotechnology, Horticulture, and Research (BHR) and Livestock and Foreign Agriculture (LFA) Subcommittees. I learned a lot about trends and issues in the biotech industry as well as applications and advancements in both plants and animals. I got to ask the panel about the potential of animal biotechnology to help prevent the spread of animal disease and in animal welfare, and also about the issues in the regulatory environment.

This week was District Staff Fly-In Week. It was so great having Cory in D.C. representing Minnesota's 7th District
