Dear Friend:

This week, Congress joined the nation in honoring law enforcement. Dozens of Minnesota police officers came to D.C. as we unveiled a new memorial to the fallen. Of course, Deputy Josh Owen, who was killed in the line of duty last year defending his community, sadly had his name added to this memorial. I was so touched to see how many of his loved ones came to town with his family to show their support.

I had the honor and the pleasure of taking these many officers and their family on a night tour of the Capitol, and then invited them to come back with me to the Rules Committee to witness us debate legislation that supports them and their work.

Backing the Blue in Congress

In support of the brave men and women who serve our communities, the House passed legislation to hold criminals accountable and empower our law enforcement to do their job as safely and effectively as possible.

  • The LEOSA Reform Act expands concealed carry rights for off-duty and retired officers, guaranteeing they can use their training to keep Americans safe, whether they're on or off duty.
  • The Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide for the detention of certain aliens to commit assault against law enforcement officers.
  • Right now, visitors, congressional staff, and even members of Congress have been victims of crimes as we are seeing a trend of juveniles (which includes people up until age 25 in the District) committing crimes, combined with a lack of consequences. The DC CRIMES Act of 2024 will reduce criminal activity in the District by making it easier to bring criminal juveniles to justice and ensuring the D.C. Council cannot continue its soft-on-crime agenda.
  • The Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act of 2024 would bolster reporting requirements for assaults on officers and require the Department of Justice to report to Congress on how these traumatic incidents affect their mental health.
  • House Resolution 1213, introduced by my friend and former police officer, Congressman Pete Stauber, recognizes the harsh realities cops face and the mental toll their jobs can take. It condemns efforts to defund or demoralize them.
  • The Biden administration also needs to be held accountable. Their lack of action in dealing with the crisis at the southern border has increased the risk for our officers. The Police Our Border Act requires the Attorney General to submit a report on border crisis’ impact at the Federal, State, local, and Tribal level and House Resolution 1210 condemns the Biden border crisis and the tremendous burdens law enforcement officers face as a result.

Thank you for reading!

As always, my office is open and ready to serve constituents of Minnesota's Seventh Congressional District! Please do not hesitate to get in touch if there is anything I can do to help. And, if you think any of your friends or family would be interested in these updates, feel free to forward this along. Have a great weekend and don't forget to thank the police officers in your life!

Sincerely,
