Dear Friend:

As you kick off the start of summer this Memorial Day weekend, I hope you enjoy whatever you have planned, and I hope you also take a moment to remember that for so many, today is a somber reminder of patriotism and sacrifice. To all those who have lost a loved one in service to this country, know that their commitment and courage inspire countless people across this nation. And to those of you currently serving, thank you for standing in defense of America's freedom. The citizens of this country are forever grateful.

This country is committed to doing all it can to support our veterans, but we in Congress know many of those systems of support need improvements. Last week, I cosponsored the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act to deliver on the Republican commitment to creating a modern, efficient VA for today and tomorrow's veterans. This legislation package gives veterans more choices about where to receive healthcare, including expanding access for severely ill and aging veterans to receive care at home, not an institution. It updates the disability benefit claims process. And, it holds the VA accountable to the taxpayers and veterans they serve.
