Dear Friend:

I want to keep you in the loop on issues that matter to you. We are working on a lot in Congress to support our constituents right to the core of their communities and local governments, and I'm excited to share some of that work with you. And if you know someone you think would be interested in issues affecting your local government, I encourage you to share this email with them!

Marshall Census Update

Last year, Marshall Mayor Bob Byrnes reached out to my office because it had come to the city's attention the Census Bureau had made a mistake in their reporting of their population size. Due to the pandemic, 2020 figures did adequately reflect the city's growth, as student housing was not recorded. In 2023, the city of Marshall submitted a Post-Census Group Quarters Review, which the Census Bureau created to correct the reporting. At the end of the year the Bureau informed the city they had resolved their case, but the city had not received updated figures, so I teamed up with Senator Klobuchar to send a letter to the Bureau and ensure the issue was resolved. I am happy to report that earlier this year the Census Bureau released corrected population estimates, revealing that the city of Marshall continues to grow.

Census numbers determine how much federal funding a city will get for the next ten years, so having accurate reporting is incredibly important. I am proud I was able to help the city of Marshall and I am glad this issue has been resolved.

Oklee Post Office Dedication

One of the lesser-known privileges of being a Member of Congress is the dedication of Post Offices. For example, I recently had the privilege of joining the Oklee community as they renamed their Post Office in honor of Coya Knutson, the first woman to represent the state of Minnesota in Congress. It was an honor to have introduced and passed the legislation to commemorate someone who had such an impact on this community, the state, and the country.

Though her time in Congress came with its fair share of challenges, from both in Washington and back home, she was passionate about her beliefs and stuck to her guns to improve the lives of her fellow Minnesotans.

Enhancing Northern Border Security

Under the Biden-Harris Administration's border policies, or lack thereof, not only do we have an effectively open southern border, but we have seen an increase in illegal crossings at our northern border. These crossings have led to a rise in fentanyl overdoses, human trafficking, and even known terrorists crossing our borders. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is failing our citizens, and now Congress is going to have to step in to protect our national security and government accountability. I was proud to co-sponsor Northern Border Security Enhancement and Review Actwhich will push DHS to do its job and address the threats at our northern border.

Designating the Bald Eagle as the National Bird

Did you know that the Bald Eagle is not officially designated as America's national bird? It has been on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782, and yet it, nor any bird, is the official national bird. Congress is finally working to right that wrong.

Earlier this year, I cosponsored legislation to designate the bald eagle as the national bird, and companion legislation was introduced in the Senate. I look forward to passing this legislation and officially distinguishing such an iconic national symbol.
