Dear Friend:

Thank you to the over 6,000 people who joined my telephone town hall last week. It was great to give you all an update about what's been going on in Congress. And I enjoyed taking your questions! We covered everything from concerns about gray wolves to DOGE to federal regulations to trade to misinformation surrounding the SAVE Act.

Encouraging Law Enforcement Recruitment and Retention

Across the Seventh District, I hear about the recruitment and retention struggles for our police force. This of course was worse when the Left used their time in leadership to villainize law enforcement. Unfortunately, that false narrative has made this noble profession less appealing for many. Luckily, we now have government leadership that supports and respects police, and I am doing what I can to increase recruitment and retention of the force from Washington.

Last week, I introduced the Law Enforcement Education Grant Program Act. This would provide federal grants to students pursuing their first degree in law enforcement or a criminal justice-related field. As a requirement of receiving the grant, the applicant must commit to serving as a full-time law enforcement officer for four years within an eight-year period of completing their studies. If an applicant fails to complete their service requirements, the grant will be converted into a loan and the applicant will be required to pay it back, with exemptions for officers who are injured in the line of duty who cannot serve out the 4-year requirement. The grant would be for up to $4,000 per year, not exceeding $16,000 total. I will be urging leadership to bring this bill to the House floor for a vote this Congress.

What's Next for One Big Beautiful Bill

Last week, the last three major committees, Agriculture, Energy & Commerce, and the Ways and Means Committee where I sit, burned the midnight oil to deliver their portions of the One, Big, Beautiful Bill to help our farmers, families, and small businesses. The Ways and Means Committee marked up the tax portion of the bill for eighteen hours and I am proud of the final product. We made Trump's 2017 tax cuts permanent. We made the 199A small business deduction permanent and expanded it. We doubled the Death Tax Exemption, helping the nearly 30,000 farms across the 7th District pass down their life's work to the next generation. We expanded the Child Tax Credit to support the over 74,000 families in western Minnesota. And we accomplished so much more.

Late last night, the House Budget Committee combined all of the submissions into One, Big, Beautiful Bill. And, on Wednesday at 1:00 AM, I will sit down with my colleagues in the Rules Committee to debate the legislation before we bring it to the floor for a vote. It's an exciting week and I am eager to deliver on our promises to the American people.

Thanks for visiting!

The Midwest Dry Bean Coalition works to promote production and sell dry beans all over the world. I enjoyed talking to them about the Farm Bill and trade opportunities for our producers.
