Dear Friend:

Throughout Governor Walz's time in office, Minnesota has been a hotbed of waste, fraud, and abuse. From the Feeding Our Future fraud scheme, which is being called the largest abuse of COVID funding in the country, to rampant fraud within the Minnesota Department of Human Services' Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) program, it has become an embarrassment and this Walz administration needs to be held accountable.

Last week, my colleagues and I sent letters to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy, Jr., and Governor Walz himself to address these issues. We asked Governor Walz to provide us information about how fraud transpired in the HSS program specifically, what steps he is taking to fix it, and how he plans to prevent future fraud within the program. And, we called for a formal federal investigation into Medicaid fraud within the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the state's failure to responsibly administer programs.

I look forward to quick responses to our letters and to getting Minnesota back on the right track.

Taking the One Big Beautiful Bill on the Road

This weekend, the Ways and Means Committee held two field hearings on the impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill.

In Las Vegas, the heart of the service industry, we discussed the wins for the American worker. The attendees who told us that the tax provisions would benefit them included a restaurant server, a DoorDash driver, a paint foreman, a local retiree, a director of manufacturing, and a mother of four who owns a small business. With no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, an expanded Child Tax Credit, and the extension of the historic 2017 doubled standard tax deduction, low- and middle-income blue-collar workers will feel the benefits. You can watch my full conversation here.

At the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA, we spoke with a panel of witnesses about how the One Big Beautiful Bill will benefit small businesses and farmers. By making the 199A small business tax credit permanent and permanently extending and expanding the Death Tax exemption, this legislation supports our rural economies. You can watch my remarks here.

Introducing the HEN Act for Minnesota Sportsmen

Hunting is a way of life in rural Minnesota, and sportsmen and women have a long history of being strong advocates for wildlife populations. Building hen houses is a non-intrusive, voluntary, and scientifically supported approach to revitalizing falling duck populations.

I am proud to introduce the HEN Act, which will refocus funds to invest in additional hen houses in the Prairie Pothole Region. The legislation will authorize $3.5 million in competitive grant funding each year for five years for the construction, installation, and maintenance of nearly 20,000 hen houses, resulting in the production of tens of thousands of additional mallards throughout the country.

This will support the efforts of local sportsmen without creating additional, unnecessary regulatory burdens on our western Minnesota farmers.

Protecting Our Sugar Producers

Tariffs on sugar and sugar-containing imports are critical tools to protect America's sugar industry. However, those tools are only effective if all imported products abide by them. It has come to my attention that some products are being imported as "molasses" are evading the required tariffs, harming our domestic processers and refiners.

I have sent a letter to Secretary of the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to use their Congressionally-given authority to coordinate with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) through their Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) to reveal all the characteristics of the imported product to ensure these imports are not improperly displacing U.S.-produced sugar.

Defending Rural Hospitals

Congress has an opportunity to improve and enhance the program to better serve Medicare Advantage (MA) beneficiaries. Last week, the House Ways and Means Subcommittees on Health and Oversight held a hearing called Medicare Advantage: Past Lessons, Present Insights, Future Opportunities.

During the hearing, I asked Dr. David Basel, Vice President of Clinical Quality and Population Health Officer for Avera Health how prior authorization policies specifically affect rural areas. We have seen data showing that MA enrollees face longer hospital stays due to prior authorization delays, which impact patient flow and hospital capacities, especially in our rural facilities.

This hearing helped my colleagues and I examine opportunities to enhance benefits and improve MA to continue delivering better health outcomes and lowers costs, while still ensuring program integrity.
