National Police Week

Image

This week, as we celebrate National Police Week, I want to take a moment to honor the incredible men and women in blue who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

To the law enforcement officers serving throughout Minnesota’s Seventh District: thank you.

Every single day, our officers display exceptional bravery, selflessness, and dedication. They are the first to respond in a crisis, putting their lives on the line to protect their neighbors. America is safer and stronger because of their courage, which is why we must ensure they have the full resources and backing necessary to do their jobs successfully.

I am proud to consistently stand up for our police officers in Washington. That is why I cosponsored the National Law Enforcement Officers Remembrance, Support, and Community Outreach Act to enhance officer safety and strengthen community outreach. I also cosponsored the Protect and Serve Act to establish enhanced penalties for criminals who target and purposefully harm our law enforcement officers.

This week, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by our officers and their families. Please join me in standing with our law enforcement and ensuring they have the tools, training, and unwavering support necessary to keep Western Minnesota safe.

Hearing From Our Law Enforcement

I had the opportunity to sit down with the Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). With over 2,500 members across 23 lodges in our state, the FOP does incredible work by providing a legal safety net for our officers and supporting their families through the FOP Foundation during times of crisis. I was proud to share that I am cosponsoring the LEOSA Reform Act, which would ensure retired and active officers have the right to defend themselves across state lines.

I had the privilege of meeting with members from the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) to discuss the critical issues facing our law enforcement community. We discussed the strain currently placed on our officers due to the political climate in Minnesota. It is unacceptable that those who protect our communities are often met with more scrutiny than support.

Defending Our Police

Image

I was proud to support H.Con.Res. 96, Expressing Support For Law Enforcement Officers, on the House Floor this week to back the officers that protect American communities, honors the risks they take, and calls out the damage caused by defund the police rhetoric.

Under Republican leadership, violent crimes have fallen to a 125-year low, homicides are down 21% across 35 major cities, and overdose deaths dropped to their lowest since 2019. These results are a testament to what happens when we fund, support, and defend our police.
