Dear Friend:

Welcome back to the Downing Dispatch! Keep reading to learn more about what was happening in Washington this week and some exciting news about my committee assignments.

Washington Watch

This week in the Natural Resources Committee, I questioned witnesses about the threat New World Screwworm poses to America’s cattle herd. We discussed the conditions producers are facing and the steps needed to prevent future outbreaks. I am proud to cosponsor the SAFE CATTLE Act and will keep working to protect American agriculture.

In the Financial Services Committee, I highlighted the role Federal Home Loan Banks play in supporting rural lenders and expanding access to housing. I also questioned witnesses about the health of the system and whether its affordable housing programs are delivering measurable results for Montanans.

The House passed the Main Street Capital Access Act, which I proudly cosponsored to strengthen community banks and expand access to capital. The bill cuts unnecessary red tape so local lenders can better serve Montana families and small businesses.

We also passed the Stop Insider Trading Act. Members of Congress should never use positions of public trust for personal profit. This bill bans congressional stock trading and helps restore confidence in government.

I had the opportunity to sit down with leaders from the Fort Belknap Indian Community.

Thank you to FDIC Chairman Travis Hill for taking the time to meet with me this week. I appreciated the opportunity to discuss the challenges facing our banking system and how we can keep it strong for communities across Montana.
