Downing Dispatch: Protecting our Producers and Funding the Government

Welcome back to the Downing Dispatch! Keep reading to learn more about what was happening in Washington this week and some exciting news about my committee assignments.

Washington Watch

Over the past week, I’ve been working in Washington on behalf of Montana. I’ve made it clear that American beef is the best in the world and that our ranchers need stable markets without unnecessary disruptions from Washington. If we want to rebuild the herd, producers need confidence that federal policy will not undercut them at critical times.

One of the biggest developments this week was House passage of the continuing resolution to keep the government open. Democrats have already forced two funding interruptions this fiscal year, wasting taxpayer dollars and creating unnecessary disruption. House Republicans acted to provide stability and make sure our troops and small businesses are not caught in another Washington shutdown fight.

At the Natural Resources Committee meeting, I discussed my Montana Sportsmen Conservation Act and the importance of addressing the status of over 100,000 acres of Wilderness Study Areas in central Montana. This legislation aims to enhance public access and provide land managers with greater flexibility to mitigate wildfire risk.

I introduced the No HUD Funding for Sanctuary Cities Act. If a city chooses not to comply with federal immigration laws, it should not receive any HUD funding. Taxpayers who work hard should not have to support sanctuary areas that disregard the law.

I joined Governor Greg Gianforte and HUD Secretary Scott Turner at Montana State University to discuss the Foster Youth to Independence program.

This initiative helps young people transitioning out of foster care secure stable housing and build a path toward independence.
