Dear Friend,
On National Police Week, we honor the brave men and women in law enforcement who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities. From responding to emergencies to preventing crime and building relationships with the folks they serve, law enforcement officers put themselves on the line every day.
During Hurricane Helene, we saw that commitment as officers across Western North Carolina stepped up in dangerous conditions to save lives, restore order, and support recovery efforts when our communities needed them most.
Standing with Local Law Enforcement
This Police Week, I backed a legislative measure of support for law enforcement officers across the nation. This resolution recognizes the tireless work they do each day to keep our communities safe and reaffirms our commitment to standing with those who serve and protect.
I am co-sponsoring the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act, which strengthens law enforcement’s ability to address the growing threat of organized retail theft that endangers local businesses and community safety.
Additionally, I am a co-sponsor of the Cashless Bail Reporting Act, which increases transparency and public safety in jurisdictions that have adopted cashless bail policies. This legislation requires the Attorney General to publish a list of state and local governments that allow dangerous criminals to be released while awaiting trial, helping ensure accountability and informed policymaking.
Honoring North Carolina’s Fallen Officers
As we recognize those who serve, we also remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their courage and service will never be forgotten.
The following officers will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial:
Fallen Officers from North Carolina
- Arthur D. Ramsey – Asheville, North Carolina, P.D.
- Frank J. Hagan – Asheville, North Carolina, P.D.
- Francisco P. Flattes II – Cherokee County, North Carolina, S.O.
- Mark D. Laskowski – OAJ Ellis Airport, P.D.
- Roger L. Smith – WakeMed Campus Police & Public Safety Dept., North Carolina
We honor their service, their sacrifice, and the families who carry their legacy forward.
Sincerely,

Chuck Edwards Member of Congress |
