June 15, 2025

Friends,

It was another busy week in Congress — I wanted to give you an update on how I am bringing your voices to the People’s House.

For real-time updates on my work fighting for you, I hope you’ll follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, Twitter, and YouTube.

DEMANDING ANSWERS FROM DEFENSE SECRETARY PETE HEGSETH

This week in the House Armed Services Committee, I questioned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on his failure to submit the Department of Defense budget, the harm President Trump’s trade wars have caused for small defense companies in New Hampshire, American AI dominance over China, and his stunning refusal to follow the rulings of the United States Supreme Court.

Watch my full line of questioning here.

I want to highlight two revealing moments from my time questioning Mr. Hegseth.

The first was about the Department of Defense Budget. A complete Pentagon budget is essential for the responsible use of your taxpayer dollars.

Watch our exchange on the Pentagon budget here.

Pete Hegseth was required by law to submit the budget of the Department of Defense to Congress back in February. He failed to do that. And during my line of questioning, he refused to answer when he would comply with the law.

The second exchange I want to highlight was Mr. Hegseth’s stunning refusal to commit to following rulings of the United States Supreme Court.

Watch our exchange about United States Supreme Court rulings here.

Obeying the rulings of the United States Supreme Court is a fundamental American principle. Pete Hegseth refuses to accept it.

FIGHTING TO PROTECT PUBLIC BROADCASTING

This week, I voted against legislation that would devastate public broadcasting.

Image

I will always stand up for the public media that keeps our communities connected.

For more than sixty years, Congress has, on a bipartisan basis, supported more than 1,500 locally managed and operated public television and radio stations across America, including NHPR and NH PBS. These broadcasters are pillars of our democracy and way of life. Their programming helps ensure our kids thrive in school and keeps rural communities engaged and informed during emergencies.

That’s why I voted against this cruel and senseless bill and will never stop fighting to protect public media.

ENSURING OUR SMALL BUSINESSES HAVE THE SUPPORT TO THRIVE

Read the full text of this legislation here.

Small businesses across New Hampshire are feeling the pain and paying the price for President Trump’s senseless and chaotic trade wars. This week, I was proud to help introduce the Small Business Liberation Act, alongside Congressman Chris Pappas, which would exempt more than 34 million small businesses here in New Hampshire and across the country from President Trump’s tariffs.

Earlier this week, I questioned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about the harm President Trump’s trade wars have caused for small defense companies in New Hampshire. Watch my full line of questioning of Mr. Hegseth here.

And last week, I questioned SBA Administrator Loeffler about how President Trump’s lawless trade wars are jacking up costs and fueling uncertainty for New Hampshire’s small businesses, and why she opposes exemptions to protect our small businesses from this chaos. Watch my questions for Administrator Loeffler about how President Trump’s trade wars are hurting New Hampshire's small businesses here.

I am proud to bring the voices and priorities of New Hampshire's small businesses and employees to Congress and the House Small Business Committee.

STRENGTHENING OUR NATIONAL SECURITY AND ADVOCATING FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE IN THE HOUSE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE

This week, the House Armed Services Committee held hearings with leaders from our Armed Forces focused on our national security. I used my line of questioning to push for answers from our military leaders and to advocate for what matters most to Granite Staters.

Watch my full line of questioning about the threat to commercial shipping in the Red Sea here.

Earlier this year, President Trump agreed to a ceasefire with the Houthis, a foreign terrorist organization. He said his deal with the Houthis would restore commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

But as I heard from our military leaders this week, that hasn’t happened yet — shipping remains a no-go in the Red Sea, and the American people are paying the price.

SUPPORTING THE DEDICATED WOMEN AND MEN WHO WORK AT THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD

Watch my full line of questioning about staffing at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard here.

The men and women who work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard have very challenging and very important jobs. We must equip them with the tools and manpower they need.

This week, I questioned the leaders of our Navy about what is stopping the 150 needed shipyard workers from being hired.

I hope you join me in thanking both of these dedicated servicemembers for their service to our nation.

This week, I was honored to join the Change of Command Ceremony to thank outgoing Captain Michael Oberdorf and to welcome Captain Jesse Nice as he begins his tenure as the 88th Commander of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

BRINGING THE VOICES OF NEW HAMPSHIRE VETERANS TO CONGRESS

I am proud to be a founding member of the Democratic Veterans Caucus. Learn more from WCAX here.

America is the land of the free because we are home to generations of brave veterans. We have a sacred obligation to fight for these patriots in the face of the Trump Administration’s cruel and senseless cuts to critical healthcare and lifesaving services.

Veterans from New Hampshire and across America deserve fighters in the United States Congress, and that is why I am proud to be a founding member of the Democratic Veterans Caucus.

TAKING ACTION TO ADDRESS THE OVERDOSE CRISIS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Image

I will continue working to ensure our local partners have the tools they need to save lives.

New Hampshire was one of the hardest-hit states by the opioid epidemic.

This week, I was proud to help pass bipartisan legislation, the Halt Lethal Trafficking (HALT) Fentanyl Act, to permanently classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I.

Illicit fentanyl is the leading driver of overdose deaths in New Hampshire, taking the lives of hundreds of loved ones every year. The HALT Fentanyl Act will help stop the flow of these dangerous drugs into our communities and hold illicit distributors accountable.

A TASTE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE IN CONGRESS

Image

It was wonderful to be with so many innovative Granite Staters.

New Hampshire is home to the best of America, and that was on full display this week in our U.S. Capitol.

I was proud to partner with New Hampshire’s federal delegation and the New Hampshire State Society to help bring a taste of the Granite State to Congress.

It’s the honor of my lifetime to bring the voices and priorities of our state to Congress.

Thank you to the incredible Granite Staters who made this event possible!

Thank you to everyone who is advocating and raising awareness about Alzheimer's.

This week, I spent time with Granite Staters with Alzheimer's Impact Movement and heard about the heartbreak and challenges that thousands of patients, caregivers, and families across New Hampshire battling Alzheimer’s and dementia face every single day.

It’s an honor to bring your voices to Congress in our fight to protect your healthcare and advance mission-critical research and clinical trials to help us end Alzheimer's as we know it.

Image

Thank you to every student who submitted their work to this year’s Congressional Art Competition.

Art is an unmatched avenue of expression for students across New Hampshire — that’s what the Congressional Art Competition is all about. And in times like these, art is essential to American democracy.

This week, I welcomed our 2025 winner for New Hampshire’s Second District, Elizabeth Chung, a junior at Nashua High School South, to our Washington office.
