News from Representative Watson Coleman

Dear Neighbors,

Our nation has been rocked by the killing of three US Citizens in recent weeks at the hands of DHS agents. As I write this, the Senate is debating how to rein in ICE and CBP.  Around the country, Americans are protesting the actions of these agencies, demanding answers and accountability.

This week, I held a town hall in Princeton, where recent ICE arrests have angered many residents. I also joined a Legal Observer information session. I'll be holding a teletown hall Monday evening (details below)

Princeton Town Hall
On Wednesday evening, I held a town hall at the Suzanne Patterson Center in Princeton, New Jersey.

I was able to hear your fellow residents’ concerns over expiring health care subsidies and Republicans’ delay in extending them; ICE and DHS’s violent immigration operations in New Jersey and across the nation; President Trump’s attack on Venezuela and destabilization of the nation’s global standing; and the growing GOP affordability crisis.

The most common question I received was, “What can I do? What can I do about the craziness? What can I do to help my neighbors? What can I do to save my country?”

I don’t have all the answers, but I can tell you it starts with meetings like the town hall. There were over 160 people in that room and hundreds more watched online. Organizing with like-minded people is an important step to pushing back.

I’m grateful to be able to hear directly from my constituents in Princeton and answer many of their questions. Many expressed their frustration with the lawlessness of the DHS operations. Their frustration with the corruption in the White House. Their frustration with the unwillingness of Congressional Republicans to protect Congress’s authority. I promised to keep fighting for the 12th District.

The town hall can be viewed here.

Upcoming Teletown Hall on Monday
If you were not able to attend the town hall on Wednesday, I will be holding a teletown hall on Monday with my colleagues, Reps. LaMonica McIver and Robert Menendez, Jr.

Legal Observer Information Session

On Thursday, I joined Reps. Menendez and McIver in hosting a Legal Observer information session. DHS has violated the rights of countless residents. I encourage Americans who value their neighbors and their safety to protest the illegal actions of DHS, peacefully but loudly. Their crimes must be recorded for the day when those who have violated our rights face justice. It's up to us to serve as witnesses now.

The session included information on how to safely document the threats that ICE agents and other immigration enforcement agents have posed to our communities while understanding legal protections and rights as Americans.

Future information sessions are being planned, so if you’re interested in attending, please stay tuned.

Attack on Members of Congress

Once again, we’re seeing the consequences of increasingly violent political rhetoric in America, primarily flowing directly from Donald Trump.

This week, Congressman Maxwell Frost was punched by a stranger who told Rep. Frost that he would be deported.

And this week, during her town hall in Minnesota, a man disrupted and physically attacked Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. For years, Trump has disparaged Rep. Omar’s character, identity, and background – all for standing up to his corruption.

I’ve known Ilhan Omar for eight years. She is a fierce advocate for her constituents and for working people everywhere. I’ve had the privilege of working with her on a Jobs Guarantee, a Housing Guarantee, the Public Housing Fire Safety Act, and legislation to create an Office for Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls.

Threats on Members of Congress were up 50% in 2025 and Rep. Omar receives more than any other member. No one should endure the constant threats she receives for her advocacy and for what she represents.

Arts Roundtable

Image

This week in Princeton, I joined education leaders for a roundtable hosted by the Young Audiences Arts for Learning in order to discuss the threats to arts and arts education experiences for our communities, with a focus on our most vulnerable residents: immigrant families, students receiving IEP and 504 services' and families and individuals experiencing income inequality. I stressed the importance of engagement and attendance, addressing mental health challenges in our communities, and the role the arts can play—when well supported—in building community health and wellbeing.
