I am delighted to inform you that Congress recently passed $10.7 million in funding I advocated for to support ten community projects requested by constituents in NW Oregon! These projects will prevent landslides, strengthen workforce training, support small businesses, increase access to health care, and more. You can learn more about each of the community projects here.

Hosting US Labor Secretary Walsh in NW Oregon

Image

I was honored to host US Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh during his recent visit to Oregon. We toured local training programs and heard personal stories about how workforce training, pre-apprenticeships, and the trades are changing lives. Portland Community College at OMIC and Oregon Tradeswomen are doing important work to expand opportunities as we implement the new bipartisan infrastructure law, ramp up U.S. manufacturing, and transition to a clean energy economy.

I’m committed to working with Secretary Walsh and my colleagues in Congress to secure the resources we need to make these jobs available to more people, especially those who have historically been left behind.

Standing With the People of Ukraine

ImageI continue to join Oregonians and people around the country and the world who are outraged by the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine orchestrated by Vladimir Putin. The violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty is unacceptable and the targeting of innocent civilians is criminal. Putin’s continued aggression has been met with immediate economic and diplomatic consequences. I support the strong sanctions already announced by President Biden and our European Union allies, and we must continue intensifying that pressure until Putin, and those around him, bring this war to an end. During his address to Congress President Zelensky embodied the remarkable courage of the Ukrainian people. We stand with him in his fight for peace, and will continue to help Ukraine protect its people and democracy.

I recently met with members of the Silver Years Senior Day Center in Beaverton. This is a Russian speaking community, and the members are all from countries that were part of the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine. It was very meaningful to hear their concerns and answer their questions. Huge thanks to the amazing translator!

Transitioning to Clean Energy Transportation

Image

We can’t solve the climate crisis without drastically reducing emissions. As the only member from the Pacific NW on the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, I’m working hard to electrify our transportation sector and was thrilled to help deliver historic investments in electric vehicles through the bipartisan infrastructure law. I appreciate TriMet’s commitment to transitioning to a zero-emissions bus fleet, and it was great to tour their testing ground for zero-emissions bus technology.

I helped craft the Select Committee’s Climate Action Plan, which sets our nation on a path to reach net-zero emissions no later than mid-century and net-negative thereafter. As of this week the House has passed more than 400 recommendations included in the report. You can follow our progress here.
