I hope you had a meaningful  Memorial Day weekend. It’s important to remember the brave men and women who lost their lives in service to our nation, and also remember why they served—to protect our country and its values and freedoms.

On Monday I joined the American Legion Post #124 and Beaverton Mayor Beaty for a Memorial Day service to honor the memory and sacrifice of our country’s fallen servicemembers. Congress can continue to honor their legacy by providing support to veterans and their families. Bipartisan legislation like the PACT Act—which has helped more than 10,700 Oregonians receive the VA health care benefits they need—provide an example of the progress we can make when we work together.

Celebrating the STAGE Act

Image

Thank you to all of the local arts leaders and advocates who gathered to celebrate my Supporting Theater and Arts to Galvanize the Economy (STAGE) Act. This bill will help revitalize and grow nonprofit theaters, many of which are still struggling after the pandemic, while providing economic and health benefits in rural, coastal, suburban, and urban communities. And thanks to the Judy for hosting us!

Visiting Columbia County

ImageI started my day in Columbia County with a tour of lifempowered’s center in St. Helens, where we discussed their need for a new building. The organization does critical work to provide support and care for people with developmental disabilities and is one of the only providers that offers these services in Columbia County.

I also stopped by Columbia County Habitat for Humanity to celebrate the $280,000 I helped secure through Community Project Funding. This investment will support water and electric infrastructure for ten affordable homes in Scappoose, which are needed in this rural NW Oregon community.

Investing in THPRD Emergency Shelters

ImageI was thrilled to join many dedicated local leaders and community partners to celebrate the funding I helped secure for Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (THPRD). THPRD will use the investment to improve emergency preparedness across its facilities and increase the community’s climate resilience. With more intense and frequent extreme weather caused by the climate crisis, it’s important to have safe spaces where people can go in the event of extreme heat, wildfire smoke, or any other emergency.
