Happy Halloween! I hope you and your loved ones have a safe evening of festivities.

The end of October means that Election Day is fast approaching. If you are registered to vote, you should have received your ballot already. Because of Oregon’s innovative and reliable vote-by-mail system, you can either submit your ballot by dropping it off at an official drop box or by mailing it back. Ballots must be received or mailed with a valid postmark by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, November 5th.

Breaking Ground at Columbia Memorial Hospital

ImageIt was exciting to celebrate the expansion of Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, bolstered by a $20 million federal investment I helped secure. The federal grant will allow the hospital to build a vertical evacuation tower that will keep patients, providers, and other community members safe in the event of an earthquake or tsunami. This project will transform healthcare and safety on the coast and will be a model for other resilient development.

Expanding the Youth Behavioral Healthcare Workforce

ImageWe must invest in a workforce that can meet the mental and behavioral health needs of children and youth. I visited the University of Oregon's Ballmer Institute in Portland to learn more about their innovative approach to expanding opportunities for students to prepare to work in this important field and for educators to learn more about how to address the complex needs of their students.

Investing in Affordable Housing

ImageIt was great to celebrate the reopening of Fairfield Apartments with many Oregonians who were involved in its renovation. It’s important to preserve and rehabilitate affordable housing we have, and I’m grateful to have helped secure $2 million in federal funding for this project. The rooms I toured were bright and comfortable, and the building will support residents with amenities like a food pantry and culturally-specific services provided on-site by the Urban League of Portland.

Delivering Books to Portland Public Schools Students

ImageThis year’s ice storm caused damage throughout NW Oregon, and books were destroyed at Markham Elementary School and Robert Gray Middle School in SW Portland. It was exciting to deliver several new books from the Library of Congress to students from those schools. Thanks to Portland Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Armstrong for joining us. I enjoyed hearing from students about the books they like to read and what stories interest them. Some politicians are banning books; we are delivering them.
