These past few weeks have been difficult for many. Donald Trump has already issued a slew of harmful and questionable Executive Orders; fortunately we still have checks and balances.
His unconstitutional attempt to end birthright citizenship is currently blocked by a ruling from a federal judge in Seattle. Donald Trump created chaos when he tried to stop funding that Congress already approved, which is against the law and unconstitutional. I spoke out against this egregious attempt, calling attention to how it would hurt Oregonians. Nonprofit advocates filed a lawsuit and so did the Democratic Attorneys General. Judges in both cases issued orders to stop the freeze temporarily, but the fight is not over. Confusingly, the White House said they are withdrawing their memo outlining what funding they want to freeze, but they still plan to freeze the funding. This puzzling statement only created more chaos.
Like many of you, I am deeply concerned about Trump’s reckless and dangerous actions. I am busy working with affected Oregonians to communicate the harm that will come from the cuts. And I’m also continuing to work on how we can improve the lives of the people we represent, protect civil rights and the environment, keep people safe, and increase access to affordable housing and health care. I'll keep fighting the administration’s harmful actions and ask you to keep speaking out too. You can contact me at my website or call 503-469-6010.
As we continue to learn more about the Trump administration’s agenda, I remain optimistic because of the work of Oregonians who deeply care about our communities. On MLK Day, I shared this quote from the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a breakfast hosted by the Urban League of Portland: “We must walk on in the days ahead with an audacious faith in the future.”
Progress doesn’t happen in a straight line. History shows the importance of continuing to persevere even in the face of great adversity. |
