These past few weeks have been difficult for many. Donald Trump has already issued a slew of harmful and questionable Executive Orders; fortunately we still have checks and balances.

His unconstitutional attempt to end birthright citizenship is currently blocked by a ruling from a federal judge in Seattle. Donald Trump created chaos when he tried to stop funding that Congress already approved, which is against the law and unconstitutional. I spoke out against this egregious attempt, calling attention to how it would hurt Oregonians.  Nonprofit advocates filed a lawsuit and so did the Democratic Attorneys General. Judges in both cases issued orders to stop the freeze temporarily, but the fight is not over. Confusingly, the White House said they are withdrawing their memo outlining what funding they want to freeze, but they still plan to freeze the funding. This puzzling statement only created more chaos.

Like many of you, I am deeply concerned about Trump’s reckless and dangerous actions. I am busy working with affected Oregonians to communicate the harm that will come from the cuts. And I’m also continuing to work on how we can improve the lives of the people we represent, protect civil rights and the environment, keep people safe, and increase access to affordable housing and health care. I'll keep fighting the administration’s harmful actions and ask you to keep speaking out too. You can contact me at my website or call 503-469-6010.

As we continue to learn more about the Trump administration’s agenda, I remain optimistic because of the work of Oregonians who deeply care about our communities. On MLK Day, I shared this quote from the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a breakfast hosted by the Urban League of Portland: “We must walk on in the days ahead with an audacious faith in the future.”

Progress doesn’t happen in a straight line. History shows the importance of continuing to persevere even in the face of great adversity.

Helping Oregonians Understand Their Rights

Thank you to Centro for inviting me to join community members and speak about the importance of knowing their rights as we prepare for the Trump administration’s planned mass deportation agenda. These policies would needlessly tear apart families and cause chaos to Oregonians and to the economy. I will continue to advocate for comprehensive and humane immigration reform. If you need assistance, you can find a list of resources here.

Spending MLK Day in Oregon

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day I was glad to spend time in our local community and volunteering with Oregonians who are dedicated to making our state a better place.

At the Urban League of Portland’s MLK Jr. Breakfast, I was inspired by the stories I heard of perseverance and the lessons we can learn from the civil rights movement.

I joined Mayor Wilson, P:ear staff, and volunteers at P:ear, a wonderful organization that works with youth experiencing homelessness to help them live healthier, more fulfilling lives. We helped prepare meals at their NW Portland location.

Supporting one another is especially important at this time of uncertainty. We are stronger together and I will continue working for a better future for Oregonians and Americans regardless of who is in the White House.

Standing Up for Trans Americans

Transgender students, like all students, deserve the same opportunity as their peers to learn teamwork, to find belonging, and to grow into well-rounded adults through sports. I led my colleagues in opposing a discriminatory anti-trans school sports ban, a dangerous bill that, if passed, would subject students to privacy violations and harassment in enforcement.

My GOP colleagues should be working to expand access to sports for all instead of picking on trans students.
