Last weekend we witnessed the Trump administration commit another act of horrific violence when DHS agents brutally murdered Alex Pretti in broad daylight. Federal immigration agents have shot 12 people since September, killing four. The officers involved must be held accountable for their illegal and violent actions, and I strongly support impeaching Kristi Noem for her multiple violations of the law and Constitution in her role as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

The year 2026  started off with more tyranny and chaos from the Trump administration at home and abroad. I am continuing to hear from my constituents in NW Oregon about the need to fight authoritarianism in all its forms. Keep reading for more information about what I’ve been doing in DC and in Oregon. And please keep writing, calling, and speaking out!

This month I introduced bipartisan legislation, secured funding for local community projects, shared stories about how the Trump administration’s policies are harming Oregonians and the economy, and met with constituents about issues facing Oregonians.

Your stories inform my work, and I want to continue hearing from you.

Please join me at one or both of the town hall meetings I am hosting in January and February!

 Image

The first town hall meeting will be in Washington County at the Forest Grove High School Auditorium on January 28th at 6pm. Doors open at 5. Please leave bags and backpacks at home or in your car.

If you’re unable to attend the Washington County town hall meeting, please consider joining me at a telephone town hall meeting during the State of the Union on February 24th at 6pm. You can sign up at bonamici.house.gov/live.

 No More Funding for ICE

Department of Homeland Security’s brutality must end now. The numerous violent acts federal agents have committed during the Trump administration are outrageous and un-American. ICE actions are making our communities unsafe.

What I Am Doing

5 years since January 6; One Year of Trump 2.0

Two anniversaries happened in January.

January 6th marked five years since the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol Building. I was there – it was terrifying and infuriating. We somberly remembered the harm perpetrated by MAGA extremists who tried to overturn the election, as well as the heroism of the first responders who fought to protect our democracy, many of whom were injured and some of whom lost their lives.

January 20th marked one year since Trump’s second inauguration. Since then, he has continuously violated federal law, illegally usurped the power of Congress, denied due process, alienated allies, and put lives at risk.

I have long supported impeaching President Trump and will continue to work with my colleagues to bring an impeachment resolution to the House floor.

Working Toward Affordability for Oregon Families

While the administration falsely touts a more “affordable” America, families are feeling the burden of the economic reality. According to the Democratic Joint Economic Committee’s most recent report, Oregonians are paying almost $1,800 a year MORE under Trump.

With erratic tariff policies and radical and unpredictable foreign engagement, Trump is destroying confidence in America’s economy and burdening Oregonians with rising costs of living.

I will keep fighting for more affordable education, housing, child and medical care, and more. All Oregonians should have economic security that allows them to meet their basic needs.

A Big Step Forward to Save ACA Tax Credits

In early January, the House passed a bipartisan bill to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits, preserving essential access to medical care for millions of Americans.

Thank you to everyone who contacted my office to share your stories. Before the final vote, I spoke on the floor about what thousands of NW Oregonians would face if this bill did not pass: steep premium increases and life-altering health decisions. I voted yes, and with 17 Republicans joining us from across the aisle, it passed. I encourage my Senate colleagues to quickly pass the extension of the ACA tax credits to help keep health care access costs down for thousands of Oregonians and millions of Americans.

Fighting for Reproductive Freedom

This month, Republicans pushed two blatantly anti-choice bills – the deceptively named “Pregnant Students’ Rights Act” and the “Protecting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act.”

I spoke in committee and on the floor against the so-called Pregnant Students’ Rights Act. Let me be clear: politicians should not dictate the deeply personal health care decision of when and whether to have a child.

Additionally, I spoke out against legislation that would allow funds to be sent to crisis pregnancy centers. These centers hold themselves out as health care providers, but then  engage in deceptive advertising and use blatant misinformation about their services, putting patients’ health at risk. I’ve introduced the Stop Anti-Abortion Disinformation Act to prohibit this deceptive advertising.

The fight for reproductive freedom is personal for me, as it is for so many people. These are important decisions that should be made between patients and health care providers.

Community Project Funding Updates

There is some good news for this district! I recently secured funding for five community projects across NW Oregon.

  • $2 million for Portland State University’s Semiconductor Innovation and Nanoscience Center
  • $1.092 million for City of Hillsboro’s Seismically Resilient Water Treatment Plant Chemical Building
  • $1.031 million for Oregon CASA Network (OCN)’s A CASA for Every Child
  • $1.031 million for Clatsop County’s Public Safety Equipment and 911 Operations Initiative
  • $800,000 for Multnomah County’s Pretrial Monitoring Program Behavioral Health Expansion Pilot

As we move into February, please stay in touch and do not hesitate to contact my office.
