I am on my way back to D.C. after a week back at home in Oregon. After meeting with many inspiring organizations and community members, I’m feeling recharged and ready to continue the work to improve the lives of Oregonians.Image

While in Portland, I helped cut the ribbon on the new free food market, community space, and senior center at Neighborhood House. Their food pantry typically serves about 2,000 people per month; last month, that number jumped to 3,000.

Oregonians can’t afford Trump’s price hikes. Costs continue to rise for groceries, gas, child care, health care, and more. Meanwhile, Trump is hard at work for HIMSELF by actively trading in the stock market – making more than 3,700 trades just in the first three months of this year.

Instead of working to lower costs for American people, Trump wants to use your taxpayer dollars for:

  • An illegal war in Iran that continues to put the lives of service members and civilians at risk and costs close to $1 billion per day
  • A massive bailout fund for billionaires and insurrectionists
  • An enormous UFC fight on the White House grounds on his birthday

I continue to hear from Oregonians that they don’t want their tax dollars to fund these dangerous, self-serving vanity projects.

And Trump’s illegal war in Iran must end immediately. At the end of May, I was on the House floor ready and willing to vote yes on the War Powers Resolution to stop this unauthorized war. At the last minute, Republicans pulled the bill off the floor. The reason? They knew we had the votes for the bill to pass. This war is dangerous, expensive, and unpopular and is taking a major toll on the well-being of the American people. I will not stop fighting to reign in this President and end the conflict.

Welcome Home, Maria

Image

Maria, an Oregon mother, has finally been reunited with her family after nearly four months in ICE detention. A federal judge found that ICE had no lawful basis to detain her, and that ICE had violated her due process rights.

I first heard about Maria when her sister-in-law came to my town hall meeting in January. Since then, I’ve visited Maria in Tacoma and continued to advocate for her release. ICE never should have detained Maria and she certainly should never have been imprisoned for months away from her husband and children.

Like too many others across the country, Maria has had her life disrupted by the President’s illegal and aggressive tactics. I will continue to fight these inhumane policies and actions with policy, protest, and the legal system.

Secretary McMahon: Dismantling and De-Valuing Education

Secretary Linda McMahon is a dream-killer. She continues to undermine the Department of Education and her policies will make it harder and more expensive for students to fulfill their dreams. Under McMahon’s leadership, bureaucracy has expanded while critical educational infrastructure is dismantled. In the House Education and Workforce Committee, I pressed her for answers on why this administration is intent on dismantling and devaluing education. Watch a video of me questioning her here. I also spoke with education advocate Mrs. Frazzled about the experience.

What I’m Working On: Legislative Highlights

Protecting Student Loans

I’m leading legislation to repeal the Department of Education’s recent changes to the student loan program. Their new rule unnecessarily limits the definition of a professional degree for the purpose of establishing federal loan caps, which will force future nurses, social workers, teachers, firefighters, physical and occupational therapists, and many others to turn to often predatory, high-interest private lenders to complete their degrees. It also officially eliminates the Grad PLUS program and creates new, less affordable loan repayment options for all borrowers. These changes are unacceptable and I will do everything I can to oppose them.

Investing in Child Care

I’m leading a bipartisan, bicameral initiative to improve access to essential child care services by investing in future professionals through expanding career and technical education (CTE).

Lowering Energy Costs

The Science Committee passed my legislation to strengthen water power, shore up the electrical grid, and lower energy costs.
