Dear Friend,

If you or someone you love has struggled with a behavioral health disorder, you likely know how isolating it can be.

The road to recovery is long and difficult. And for folks dealing with a mental health and substance abuse issue, just having someone to talk to who has the same lived experience can make all the difference.

That is why I introduced the bipartisan Providing Empathetic and Effective Recovery (PEER) Support Act, legislation that would make it easier for people to become peer support specialists.

Peer support specialists are qualified experts who have been through the recovery process themselves and are trained to help others on their recovery journey.

Research shows that peer-to-peer support services can significantly decrease substance abuse and reduce re-hospitalization for mental illness. However, there are many barriers to entry that are preventing individuals from becoming or continuing to work as peer support specialists.

My bipartisan bill will help break down those barriers and expand access to peer support services for folks who need them.

Be well,
