News from Congresswoman Andrea Salinas

Dear Friend,

89 years ago this month, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. Today, millions of Americans rely on this critical program to make ends meet.

In honor of this important milestone, I decided to host a “birthday party” for Social Security at Tigard Senior Center–complete with cupcakes, singing, and even some bingo!

Social Security was founded on the principle that every American who works hard and contributes to our society should be able to retire with dignity and financial peace of mind.

I couldn’t agree more. That is why I am committed to not only protecting Social Security, but improving it for current enrollees and for future generations.

In Congress, I am working hard to pass legislation like the Social Security 2100 Act, which would increase benefits across the board for the first time in over 50 years, improve the Cost-of-Living Adjustment to keep up with the inflation that our seniors are experiencing right now, and ensure that millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share into the program.

The bill also closes several loopholes that make it difficult for seniors to get the benefits they deserve. That includes putting an end to the 5-month waiting period for those receiving disability benefits, as well as eliminating the harmful windfall elimination provision and government pension offset to deliver full benefits for our retired public servants.

Finally, a big part of my job is helping Oregonians navigate federal agencies. Whether you need assistance with your Social Security benefits or just have questions about a federal agency, please call my office at (503) 385-0906 or visit my website here to get connected with a member of my staff.

Be well,
