Dear Friend,
I can hardly believe it, but March is already here! Before we jump into spring, I wanted to give you a quick update on what I did last month for you and your neighbors in Oregon’s Sixth District.
(P.S. Be sure to forward this newsletter to a friend so they can stay up-to-date on my work, upcoming events, and more!)

To kick off February, I joined Senator Jeff Merkley for a town hall in Salem, where we had nearly 700 Oregonians in attendance! It was great to hear directly from so many of you about the issues that matter to our community. If you missed this event, don’t worry – I’m hosting a LIVE telephone town hall on Monday at 4:30 PM PT. You can fill out the form here to receive a phone call and participate in our conversation.
Back in Washington DC, I introduced several pieces of legislation that will improve access to mental health care and addiction treatment for Oregonians and all Americans.
My Gambling Addiction Recovery, Investment, and Treatment Act, otherwise known as the GRIT Act, would devote existing federal funds to the study, prevention, and treatment of gambling addictions. Problem gambling is a growing issue across America. My legislation would help connect more Americans with the treatment they deserve – and better yet, it doesn’t raise your taxes or create more government bureaucracy. I also introduced the HOPE and Mental Wellbeing Act, which would provide three free mental health visits per year to millions of seniors, disabled individuals, and low-income Americans. This legislation would reduce the stigma and encourage more folks to seek out mental health care when they need it, without having to worry about the price tag.
I also had productive meetings with community members and student organizations from Oregon, like Tualatin Together and the LEAP (Leadership, Education, Advocacy and Prevention) Youth Alliance. These young leaders are working hard to educate their peers about the dangers of drugs and the importance of leading a healthy, substance-free life. I was so inspired by their work that I gave a speech on the House floor to recognize their achievements. You can watch my speech here or below.

As your Congresswoman, I am laser-focused on bringing down costs and making our communities safer. Unfortunately, the current Administration continues to enact policies that are taking us further away from that goal and making life more expensive for Oregonians – and I will not stand for it. That is why I sent a letter to President Trump, urging him to protect Oregon’s wine industry and end the trade war with Canada. Our northern neighbor purchases more Oregon wine than any other country. If these harmful tariffs are allowed to continue, our wineries here in the Willamette Valley will lose a vital source of income and may be forced to close shop. I also led 80 of my colleagues in a letter calling on the Administration to immediately reverse their decision to fire thousands of Forest Service workers. Job cuts at the Forest Service could impact our ability to effectively prevent and fight wildfires. Thankfully, our efforts are starting to be successful – and I will continue to push back against any policies from the Administration that will have a negative impact on Oregon families.
Remember: my team and I stand ready to assist you with any issues you may be having with federal agencies, funding cuts, and problems accessing your hard-earned benefits. Below are a few helpful resources:
- Funding Cuts Survey: My office is collecting personal stories and feedback from Oregonians who have been or anticipate being impacted by the Trump Administration’s funding freeze or any kind of unexpected cuts. That includes fired federal workers, small business owners who have lost federal grant funding, and others. To share your story, please click here.
- Casework: If you need help or have questions about federal agencies like the VA, Social Security, or Medicare, my office may be able to assist you. We have Spanish speakers and veterans on staff. Please give us a call at (503) 385-0906 or visit salinas.house.gov/casework.
- Know Your Rights: In light of the Trump Administration’s ongoing threats to immigrant communities, it's important for Oregonians to know their rights if approached or detained by ICE. Visit salinas.house.gov/rights to learn more.

Be well,
Andrea Salinas Member of Congress
