News from Congresswoman Andrea Salinas

Dear Friend,

This week marked 90 years since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. This landmark legislation guarantees that our nation's seniors can retire with dignity and peace of mind after a lifetime of contributions to our society.

Nine decades later, there are currently over 143,000 Social Security recipients here in Oregon's Sixth District alone. As your Congresswoman, I am working to safeguard those benefits for you and the 70 million other Americans who depend on them.

Take a look at the number of people in our district who rely on Social Security below.

In December of 2024, I helped pass the Social Security Fairness Act, which repealed the windfall elimination provision (WEP) and government pension offset (GPO), which previously denied teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public servants the full Social Security benefits they rightfully earned. I am committed to building on that work and delivering even more for hardworking Oregonians.

However, President Donald Trump and his Administration are cutting critical staff and slashing much-needed services. Staffing numbers at Social Security offices in Oregon are already down by 8% compared to last year. Trump’s Treasury Secretary even admitted that Republicans want to privatize Social Security. But I won’t let that happen — alongside my colleagues I will work to protect it for generations to come.
