Dear Friend,
If you receive health care through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), you may soon have to pay thousands of dollars more per year on your premium if Republicans in Congress don't act soon.
Right now, thousands of Oregonians and millions of Americans rely on premium tax credits to afford insurance through the ACA marketplace, but these credits are set to expire at the end of this year. Democrats expanded these tax credits in 2021, making premiums more affordable for everyone. As a result, enrollment has almost doubled since 2021, with over 24 million Americans getting their insurance through the Marketplace. But the progress we’ve made on affordable care is at risk of being undone.
Here’s what I have to say about the fight to keep your health costs down:
Now, Congress needs to renew these credits, but Republicans plan on letting them expire. That would mean a big spike in premiums when millions across our country re-enroll for 2026.
I know that Americans are already stretched thin. Expenses for things like housing, utilities, and groceries are on the rise. For many, an increase in health care premiums is simply not affordable.
(Make sure to forward this information to someone who might need to read this.)
To make matters worse, Republicans recently passed their Big, Ugly Bill, which brought with it the most significant cuts to Medicaid in history. These cuts add enormous financial pressure to an already strained health care system. I recognize that the tax credits are not a silver bullet to fix our health care affordability crisis, but we cannot let hard-won gains on access to care unravel.
Republicans in Congress face a clear choice. They can let the tax credits expire; or they can prioritize the health care access of their constituents over tax breaks for billionaires. You can count on me to continue fighting to lower costs and make quality health care affordable for you and your families.
