Dear Friend,

I want to invite you to my upcoming telephone town hall next Wednesday, July 1, from 5 pm to 6 pm PT! RSVP here to learn more about how I’m fighting for Oregon in Congress and have your questions answered.

Ahead of the town hall, I also want to share something important so we can make sure every Oregon household is ready for an emergency. Please read on.

Are You Prepared?

Oregon faces a variety of natural hazards. We can’t always predict when or where the next crisis will strike, but we can control how ready we are when it does. Taking the time to prepare now can make a big difference for you, your family, and your neighbors down the line.

Every household should have at least three things in place. First, build an emergency kit with enough supplies to sustain your household for at least three days — water, food, medications, first aid, important documents, and more. Learn more about building an emergency kit and how to do so on a budget. Second, develop a family plan: evacuation routes, shelter options, communication methods, and more. Click this link to build a plan that works for your household. Third, have emergency alerts turned on. To receive real-time notifications for your county, sign up for OR-Alert at oralert.gov. It is free and only takes a few minutes!

For more detailed guidance on preparedness, visit oregon.gov/oem and ready.gov.

A Note About Wildfire Season

Wildfires are one of Oregon’s most pressing seasonal hazards, and fire season is now underway. Look up your area’s risk on the Oregon Wildfire Risk Explorer, understand evacuation levels (1, 2, or 3), check current fire conditions at oregon.gov/odf, and monitor air quality at airnow.gov.

Areas affected by wildfires are under greater threat of flooding and mudslides. Find information about flood insurance and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) here.

Recovering From Disaster

Contact your insurance. The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation has resources available to help with this process. Call their hotline at (888) 877-4894 or visit their website for tips and advice.

Look into federal disaster assistance. In some cases, you may be eligible for FEMA assistance covering housing, uninsured losses, and other essential needs. The Small Business Administration also offers low-interest loans to assist homeowners, renters, and businesses in their recovery.

Replace important documents. Visit FEMA’s Replacing Vital Documents page for guidance on how to replace vital documents — such as birth certificates, Social Security cards, green cards, and more — that have been lost.

Beware of scams. The confusion that often follows a disaster can be an ideal environment for scammers. Protect yourself by finding trusted sources of information and staying educated.

Contact my office. If you are unsure where to turn for help or are having trouble navigating a federal agency, please reach out to my district offices or call at (503) 385-0906. My staff and I are committed to supporting you.
