IMPORTANT UPDATES from CONGRESSMAN SMUCKER
Dear Friend,
Last week, my colleagues and I in the House passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1)—a major step forward in delivering meaningful relief to hardworking American families.
At the heart of this bill is a permanent extension of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). Without action, middle-class families would face an average tax hike of $1,700 at the end of this year. The average taxpayer would see their rate jump by 22 percent. Over 40 million families would lose half of their child tax credit, and 26 million small businesses would see their top tax rate surge by more than 43 percent.
This bill stops those tax hikes. It also delivers for the American people by eliminating federal taxes on tips and overtime and providing relief for seniors by expanding the standard deduction for those over the age of 65.
But tax relief is just part of the story.
This bill provides the resources and tools to secure our borders, cracks down on drug trafficking and human smuggling, and unleashes American energy by cutting red tape and boosting domestic production. It ensures peace through strength by providing those serving in our armed forces with the best tools and equipment available.
The bill also strengthens Medicaid and SNAP by ensuring the benefits are only received by Americans who are truly eligible. These programs were designed to uplift the most vulnerable among us: our children, our seniors, and individuals living with disabilities. They were never intended to support those in our country illegally.
Public assistance programs are also intended to serve those in genuine need, not individuals who are able to work but choose not to. By promoting work, education, and job training for able-bodied adults without dependents, we help move people toward self-sufficiency. At the same time, we protect and preserve these essential programs for those who truly rely on them.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act reflects what most Americans believe: that work should be rewarded, the American people should be secure, and the government should make life easier- not harder- for hardworking families. I was proud to support this bill because it’s rooted in fairness, opportunity, and responsibility.
